كُلُّevery حَيٍّliving being سَيَمُوتُwill die
لَيْسَthere is no فِيin الدُّنياthe world ثُبُوتُpermanence
Every living being will die.
Every living being will die
There is no permanence in this world.
There is no permanence in this world
ثُمَّthen يَتْلُوهاfollows them خُفُوتُa hush
Movements will perish,
Movements that will vanish
then a hush will follow them.
Then silence follows
وَكلامٌand speech لَيْسَnot يَحْلُوis sweet

And speech—nothing is sweet
Words that are not sweet
after it but silence.
After it only quietness
أَيُّهاO السَّادِرُheedless one قُلْtell لِيto me
أَيْنَwhere ذَاكَthat الْجَبَرُوتُoverbearing might
O heedless one, tell me:
O you who pours out drink, tell me
where is that overbearing might?
Where is that omnipotence?

I was naturally inclined to speech—
I was printing on the forehead
so what is this silence?
So what is this silence?

Would that I knew: is it lifeless stillness
I wish I knew is it deep sleep
that I see, or devout submission?
That I see or prayer?

Where are the angels who
every horizon, dominion?
In every horizon have a kingdom?

The crowns have departed from them,
The crowns have been removed from them
and those thrones stand empty.
And those adornments are empty

Their homelands have become,
Their homelands after them
after them, desolate plains.
Became desolate after they left

No hearer understands speech,
No one understands the words
and no living being makes a sound.
Nor is anyone alive to make a sound

Graves were filled with them,
Tombs were built for them
and houses stood empty of them.
And their homes left empty

The misfortunes of time did not protect them
time—when these arrived—by good fortune.
When their glory declined

Those endeavors died away,
Those ambitions are extinguished
and those epithets came to an end.
And those reputations have ended

The world is only a phantom,
Indeed, the world is an illusion
a vain thing that will pass away.
Futile, it will pass
