لَعَمْرُby the life of أَبيكَyour father مَاnot خَفَّتْfaltered حَصَاتِيmy judgment
لَعَمْرُ أَبيكَ مَا خَفَّتْ حَصَاتِي
لِنَازِلَةٍat a calamity وَلاnor ارْتَعَدَtrembled الْفَرِيصُthe flank muscles
لِنَازِلَةٍ وَلا ارْتَعَدَ الْفَرِيصُ
By your father's life, my judgment never faltered
By your father's life, my stones did not quake
at a calamity, nor did my flanks tremble.
At the falling nor did the noble steed tremble.
وَمَاand not قَصَّرْتُI fell short فِيin طَلَبِseeking الْمَعَالِيlofty honors
وَمَا قَصَّرْتُ فِي طَلَبِ الْمَعَالِي
وَلَكِنْbut رُبَّمَاsometimes خَابَfailed الْحَرِيصُthe eager striver
وَلَكِنْ رُبَّمَا خَابَ الْحَرِيصُ
And I have not fallen short in seeking lofty honors,
I did not fall short in seeking the heights
yet sometimes the eager striver fails.
But sometimes the eager one fails.
