وَنَبْأَةٌand a faint sound أَطْلَقَتْreleased عَيْنَيَّmy eyes مِنْfrom سِنَةٍslumber
كَانَتْhad been حِبَالَةَa snare for طَيْفٍa dream-vision زَارَنِيvisited me سَحَرَاbefore dawn
And a faint sound freed my eyes from slumber
That had been a snare for a vision that visited me before dawn.
فَقُمْتُso I rose أَسْأَلُasking عَيْنِيmy eye رَجْعَthe echo of مَاwhat سَمِعَتْhad heard
أُذْنِيmy ear فَقَالَتْand it said لَعَلِّيperhaps I أَبْلُغُlearn الْخَبَرَاthe facts
So I rose, asking my eye for the echo of what was heard by
My ear; it said, “Perhaps I can learn the truth.”
ثُمَّthen اشْرَأَبَّتْit craned upward فَأَلْفَتْand found طَائِرَاًa bird حَذِراًwary
عَلَىon قَضِيبٍa twig يُدِيرُturning السَّمْعَits hearing وَالْبَصَرَاand sight
Then it craned upward and found a wary bird
On a twig, turning its hearing and sight this way and that,
مُسْتَوْفِزاًpoised to spring يَتَنَزَّىhopping فَوْقَabove أَيْكَتِهِits thicket
تَنَزِّيlike the leaping of الْقَلْبِthe heart طَالَgrew long الْعَهْدُthe interval فَادَّكَرَاthen it remembered
Poised to spring, hopping above its thicket,
As a heart leaps when, after long absence, it remembers.
لاnot تَسْتَقِرُّrests steady لَهُfor it سَاقٌa leg عَلَىon قَدَمٍa foot
فَكُلَّمَاfor whenever هَدَأَتْgrew calm أَنْفَاسُهُits breaths نَفَرَاit took fright
Not a leg of its rests steady on a foot;
For whenever its breathing calms, it starts in fright.
يَهْفُوsways بِهِwith it الْغُصْنُthe bough أَحْيَاناًat times وَيَرْفَعُهُand lifts it
دَحْوَlike the driving of الصَّوَالِجِmallets فِيacross الدَّيْمُومَةِthe trackless desert الأُكَرَاballs
At times the bough sways with it and lifts it,
As mallets drive balls across the trackless desert.
مَاwhat بَالُهُails it وَهْوَthough it is فِيin أَمْنٍsafety وَعَافِيَةٍand well-being
لاnot يَبْعَثُcasts الطَّرْفَits gaze إِلَّاexcept خَائِفَاًfearful حَذِرَاًwary
What ails it, though it is safe and sound,
That it never casts a glance except in fear and caution?
إِذَاwhen عَلاit rises بَاتَit spends the night فِيin خَضْرَاءَgreen foliage نَاعِمَةٍtender
وَإِنْand if هَوَىit swoops down وَرَدَit comes to drink at الْغُدْرَانَthe pools أَوْor نَقَرَاit pecks
When it rises, it roosts amid tender greenery;
And if it swoops down, it drinks at pools or pecks.
يَاO طَيْرُbird نَفَّرْتَyou frightened away عَنِّيfrom me طَيْفَa dream-vision of غَانِيَةٍa beautiful woman
قَدْindeed كَانَhad أَهْدَىbestowed لِيَon me السَّرَّاءَjoy حِينَwhen سَرَىit journeyed by night
O bird, you have scared a fair woman's phantom away from me,
Which had brought me joy when it came by night:
حَوْرَاءُlarge, dark-eyed كَالرِّئْمِlike a white gazelle أَلْحَاظَاًin her glances إِذَاwhen نَظَرَتْshe looked
وَصُورَةِand the face of الْبَدْرِthe full moon إِشْرَاقَاًin radiance إِذَاwhen سَفَرَاit shone forth
Dark-eyed, like a white gazelle in her glances when she looked,
And like the full moon's face in radiance when it shone forth.
زَالَتْvanished خَيَالَتُهَاher apparition عَنِّيfrom me وَأَعْقَبَهَاand following it came
شَوْقٌlonging أَحَالَbrought عَلَيَّupon me الْهَمَّsorrow وَالسَّهَرَاand sleeplessness
Her apparition vanished from me, and in its wake came
A longing that brought upon me sorrow and sleeplessness.
فَهَلْis there, then إِلَىto سِنَةٍslumber إِنْif أَعْوَزَتْis beyond reach صِلَةٌunion
عَوْدٌa return نَنَالُwe attain بِهِthrough it مِنْfrom طَيْفِهَاher dream-vision الْوَطَرَاthe desired end
Then, if union is beyond reach, is there to slumber
A return through which we may gain our desire from her vision?
