أَبَعْدَafter ...? سِتِّينَsixty years لِيfor me حَاجٌّdesires فَأَطْلُبهَاso I pursue them
هَيْهَاتَfar from it ماnot لامْرِئٍfor a man بَعْدَafter الصِّبَاyouth حاجُdesires
After sixty, have I desires still to pursue?
Far from it! A man has no desires after youth.
إِنَّindeed ابْنَthe son آدَمَof Adam فِيin الدُّنْيَاthe world عَلَىat خَطَرٍrisk
لاnot يَسْتَقِيمُstays straight لَهُfor him قَصْدٌa course وَمِنْهَاجُand a path
Indeed, the son of Adam is in peril in this world;
No course or path stays straight for him.
كَأَنَّمَاas though هُوَhe فيin فُلْكٍa ship تُحِيطُsurround بِهِaround him
مِنْfrom جَانِبَيْهِhis two sides أَعاصِيرٌwhirlwinds وَأَمْواجُand waves
As though he were aboard a ship, surrounded
On either side by whirlwinds and waves.
يَهْوَىhe longs for الْبَقاءَcontinued life ومَكْرُوهُand the evil الْفَنَاءِof death بِهِupon him
وَيَسْتَعِزُّand he seeks strength بِأَمْنٍin security فِيهِwithin it إِزْعاجُalarm
He longs to live on, though hateful death hangs over him,
And seeks strength in security fraught with alarm.
لاnot أَحْفلُI heed الطَّيْرَthe birds إِنْif غَنَّتْthey sing وَإِنْand if نَعَبَتْthey caw
سِيَّانalike عِنْدِيto me صَفَّارٌa whistling bird وَشَحَّاجُand a cawing crow
I pay the birds no heed, whether they sing or caw;
A whistling bird and a cawing crow are alike to me.
يَسْتَعْظِمُونَthey deem monstrous مِنَfrom الْحَجَّاجِal-Hajjaj صَوْلَتَهُhis ferocity
وكُلُّand every قَوْمٍpeople بِهِمْamong them لِلظُّلْمِfor oppression حَجَّاجُa Hajjaj
They deem al-Hajjaj's ferocity monstrous,
Yet every people has its own Hajjaj to oppress them.
