Thanks be to God—I cannot count the praise due Him,

For His favors, one by one and two by two.

O my visitor on Wednesday morning, you have indeed

Made me gather the finest fruit from the springtime of companionship.

A wish for which my soul had never ceased to yearn

For an age, while I blamed the days and time.

Do my enviers know today—so that I may pity them—

That I have gained from the days every wish?

O soul, glad tidings! Al-Husayn has come to you; so do not

See any aspect of time but the beautiful.

    فَاليومَ فَاِغتمضي في قربهِ وسنا

    For so long his absence has kept your eyelids sleepless;

So today, with him near, close them in drowsy sleep.

And today, take your due from every envious soul:

Your joy has turned to sorrow in his entrails.

With his return, our days have comforted us and made us forget

The harm they did us in separation.

Welcome to the noblest man, whose sight gladdened

My eye, and whose name, when mentioned, adorned my ear.

Welcome to a sun of radiant intelligence that has dazzled

The meteors of reason with lofty splendor and radiance.

Welcome to a meeting-place of purified virtues,

Through which God has openly shown His grace among us.

I was worthy of none of His gifts,

Nor have I filled hearing and the ear with them.

Welcome to him whose qualities, whenever they pass

Through my memory on any day, leave thought bewildered and enthralled.

Welcome to him whose noble deeds made me his bondsman

Long ago—how magnificent they are as the price of owning us!

Welcome to him whose visit made my heart aware

Of bliss restored, and stirred yearning for him within me.

Welcome to him: from longing and rapture, my soul nearly

Forsook my body to meet him.

Welcome to the noblest of God's creatures in standing

With me, and the closest of them in dwelling to my heart.

Welcome to him through whom God, exalted is He, has feathered

The wing of my resolve and given me in him a sheltering pillar.

Welcome to the one who spreads my renown and extols it

When a man of rancor conceals it and nurses spite.

Welcome to him who bridles my enemies and grants them

Eloquence in proclaiming my merit, though they are tongue-tied.

O master who sees no homeland but the heights,

I congratulated loved ones and the homeland on your return.

Everyone is delighted and overjoyed to meet you,

But I have the greatest share of that happiness.

Had they treated me fairly—though fairness is not their habit,

Except rarely—they would have visited me with formal congratulations.

Are you not the closest of them to me in kinship, and foremost

In affection, and the most upright in your ways of kindness?

Remain, O my visitor in kindness and [honor],

A sun whose radiance embraces the distant and the near.

It was indeed my foremost duty to be the first

To visit you, so that I might dispel suspicions.

But God willed nothing other than to grant you

Precedence, to which all praise would stand pledged.

Continue clothing me in radiant favors, for which I say:

Praise be to God—I cannot count the praise due Him.
