O You who bestow favors on all creation before they ask,

O You to whom complaint is brought when calamity strikes,

O You who honor Your servants with Your reward,

O You who command the afflicted to be patient,

    فهيَ النعيمُ وَشَأنها أَن تُشكرا

    Your trial veils hearts from all besides You;

thus it is bliss, and deserves gratitude.

Were it not presumptuous to claim I could withstand its force,

I would ask with all my might that it increase and multiply.

But knowing my own limits has compelled me

to lament my weakness and my inability to endure.

So patience reins me back from complaint, out of contentment

with You, while my condition never ceases to speak.

Remembering You spares me the need to ask; my solace,

if affliction's darkness brings loneliness, is to remember You.

Whenever I remember You while calamities obscure

the path of reason, that path becomes clear to see.

My remembrance suffices me: with His name, no harm can come

from anything; that is my shield against fear.

You have shown me Your bounty, O God, without delay,

just as You have shown me Your power to subdue.

Do not test me with afflictions, for I

flee from them to You until they retreat.

I am in Your sanctuary, keeping company with remembrance of You, seeking refuge

in Your gracious kindness—how could I fear anything dreadful?

From the sea of Your bounty, You have accustomed me to a watering place,

clear and pure; so protect my watering place from growing turbid.
