يا طيّبَ الكلمِ الرفيعِ وَيا أبا

يا طيّبَ الكلمِ الرفيعِ وَيا أبا

سنٍّ يعضُّ بِصالح الأعمالِ

سنٍّ يعضُّ بِصالح الأعمالِ

O you of sweet, lofty speech, and O Abu

O you of refined and lofty words, O father

Sinn, who bites with righteous deeds.

Of seniority that strives with righteous deeds

وافاكَ مُختارُ الخمولِ وطمرهُ

وافاكَ مُختارُ الخمولِ وطمرهُ

عَن حليةِ المُتعاظم المختالِ

عَن حليةِ المُتعاظم المختالِ

One choosing obscurity and its threadbare cloak has come to you,

Al-Mukhtar of indolence has come upon you and buried it

Rather than the finery of the pompous swaggerer.

Away from the adornment of the pretentious boaster

رَجلٌ عليهِ بالثنا كَلِمُ الورى

رَجلٌ عليهِ بالثنا كَلِمُ الورى

أَبدَت وِفاقاُ من خلاف خلالِ

أَبدَت وِفاقاُ من خلاف خلالِ

A man about whom humankind's words of praise

A man upon whom the words of mankind

Have shown concord amid differences of character.

Have shown favor, from the diversity of his talents

لِلعلمِ أَفردَ همّه فَاِعجب له

لِلعلمِ أَفردَ همّه فَاِعجب له

مِن فاردٍ في جامع الأعمالِ

مِن فاردٍ في جامع الأعمالِ

He devoted his concern solely to learning—so marvel at him,

He has devoted his care solely to knowledge, so wonder at him

As one singular in the whole range of deeds.

As a unique one in the collective of deeds

قَد فارَقَ الآمالَ فرقة كاعبٍ

قَد فارَقَ الآمالَ فرقة كاعبٍ

في جامعٍ لعبادةٍ وأمالِ

في جامعٍ لعبادةٍ وأمالِ

He has forsaken ambitions, as one parts from a budding maiden,

He has parted from hopes, like a player parting

In a mosque, for worship and dictated lessons.

In a collective of worship and hopes

حَمّلتهُ عنّي التحيّة معظماً

حَمّلتهُ عنّي التحيّة معظماً

لِعلاكَ بِالمختار للإرسالِ

لِعلاكَ بِالمختار للإرسالِ

I entrusted him with my greeting, honoring

I charged you with greeting him with veneration

Your exalted rank through the one chosen to convey it.
