    بَداهةُ الخاطرِ المكدود تحتدمُ

    Thirsting for the watering place whose approach is praised,

    The weary mind's spontaneous inspiration burns;

    And desiring an assured bond of friendship

    Between myself and an intimate from your very midst.

    نَبغتمُ وَحباكم صفوهُ الكرمُ

    May God bless the one from whose stock

    You sprang, His noble elect one who endowed you;

    With the purest blessing, the most abundant and auspicious,

    Embracing you all and especially honoring you.

    عِزّا له تهطعُ الأذقان والقممُ

    I ask God to grant Islam, wherever it dwells,

    A might before which chins and lofty heads bow;

    يُمسي بها الشعبُ منه وهو ملتئمُ

    And to clothe this land in well-being,

    Through which its people come to evening united;

    سُحباً تدرُّ بِها الأخلاف والديمُ

    And to drive toward it, from His overflowing mercy,

    Clouds through which udders and rain showers flow;

    مَفاخراً في جباهِ الدهرِ ترتسمُ

    And that the Commander of the Faithful restore to it

    Glories inscribed upon the brow of time;

    مَكانةً ما خَطَتها قَبلهُ قدمُ

    And that He bring him, in every noble achievement,

    To a station no foot before him has traversed;

    حتّى يعزّ بِهِ الأنصار والحشمُ

    And grant His pleasure to those who support him,

    Until his helpers and retainers gain strength through him;

    عَلى أَساسٍ بركنِ العدلِ يندعمُ

    And raise the structures of his state's fortress

    Upon a foundation supported by justice's pillar;

    And grant the master overseeing our headship

    A lofty rank of nearness from our forefather,

    Under the rule of the reviver of knowledge after its ruin,

    Through whom the noble masters have enjoyed prosperity.

    يوماً وَأَمساً توالت فيهما النعمُ

    May he remain in blessings, each tomorrow making him forget

    A day and a yesterday in which blessings followed one another;

    حوذَ الصرائمِ لا تلحى له ذممُ

    Firm in his supports, his landmarks raised high, his re-

    solves sharpened, his pledges never censured;

    مَشهودَ سابقةٍ بين الألى عظموا

    His well-being prolonged, his outcome praised,

    His precedence acknowledged among those who became great;

    At ease in mind, in the ample shade of a life

    Begun and ended with loved ones.

    Through your standing I seek protection from enviers who ate

    My flesh and weakened my glory's edifice with their accusations.

    They crept covertly toward my honor in deceit,

    And subjected my unsuspecting self to a blazing, savage assault.

    How many hearts they inflamed with their fabrications,

    And intimate friends they changed through their claims!

    They drove away the zeal of those seeking my knowledge,

    Yet scarcely succeeded, and God turned back their scheming.

    How many favors in learning I bestowed upon them appeared

    White and unstained, with no fault except their denial!

    How often I pardoned and sought peace with them!

    No peace can be hoped for in an envier's warfare.

    Had I repaid them for their misdeeds

    With their like, I would not have been marked by injustice.

    But I preserved myself from their watering places,

    Saying, 'The Judge is sufficient for me against them.'

    Do they resent anything but an excellence bestowed specially upon me

    Among them? Against whom, alas for them, have they borne resentment?

    Excellence is made more beautiful by one seeking to burn it

    With envy's scorching breath: so are rubies with flame.

    Despite this, I spared them no pardon or excuse,

    Out of mercy and knowledge that life passes away.

    Whatever rancor there has been, I continue

    To overlook it, without pressing my reproaches.

    I do not say resentfully, as the saying goes,

    'Wounds heal, except those inflicted by words.'

    This is the outbreathing of an aching breast, which has cast

    The first shock from my tongue and now breaks off.

    I washed from myself stains with which I was falsely charged,

    Without defaming them or branding them with reproach.

    I do not deem it lawful to disparage people of excellence,

    Nor repay them with evil, even if they wrong me.

    God's dealing with me and them has sufficed me,

    As their purpose was thwarted and their resolve dissolved.

    They incited a great man to make me a target for his arrows,

    But he turned them back after they had touched the skin.

    God intertwined an affection between us through which

    Our bond reached what kinship cannot reach.

    How swiftly the face of truth emerged, slipping free

    Of every confusion, while doubt and suspicion departed.
