يا سيّدي قضّيت أمسي جمعه

يا سيّدي قضّيت أمسي جمعه

وَاليوم غالبه حليفُ ترقّبِ

O my master, I spent all of yesterday,

and most of today, an ally of anticipation.

ثمّ اِبتدرت مذكّراً مستنجزاً

ثمّ اِبتدرت مذكّراً مستنجزاً

وَعداً تقاضيه دليل تقرّبي

وَعداً تقاضيه دليل تقرّبي

Then I hastened to remind you, seeking fulfillment

of a promise; claiming it is proof of my closeness to you.

فَاِبعث بها ستّاً تكون لزاطة

فَاِبعث بها ستّاً تكون لزاطة

فاللّوز أطيب كلّ طعم طيّبِ

فاللّوز أطيب كلّ طعم طيّبِ

So send six of them—let them be almond cordial—

for almonds are the finest of all pleasant flavors.

لا زلتَ تهدينا كما تُهدي لنا

أُنس النهى وفكاهةَ المتأدّبِ

أُنس النهى وفكاهةَ المتأدّبِ

May you never cease to give us gifts, just as you give us

the delight of the mind and the wit of a cultivated man.
