Joy's face is radiant, and the mouth of hope has broken into a smile.

Oh, what delightful cheer, and what glad tidings!

Promises of joy kept us waiting, then brought relief

with the coolness of reunion, soothing the burning liver.

It hid away, and longing kindled every last remnant of life,

and drove reason and patience from their nests.

    The believers' trial was purifying,

and a curb on others' aggression—they deserved it more.

The utmost the discerning can do is recognize

that whoever governed affairs knows them best.

You are one who laid his enemies low through pardon,

and with a second draught made them thirst, and with sickness healed them.

You discerned a wound in the affair, piercing deep within,

so you treated it with cautery and swiftly lanced it.

The foundations of sacred law are nothing but governance,

divine, following the course of the ailment.

Nor is losing a withered branch a loss to its plant,

when one fears disease may uproot the root.

And resolve may lie in slackening the reins for a retreat,

as one outwits a rival, then seizes the moment to charge.

Easy with the buckets; let them rest—for

leniency's pasture has grown green only upon a dung heap.

No injustice held it in its grip, but rather a policy

that showed us justice's face, dust-darkened by deformity.

If heedlessness or indignation rejects it,

how many an exterior has displeased, though its inner truth delighted!

We acknowledge to our lord the blessing of our protection

through your justice among us, never exchanging it for ingratitude.

We testify that God chose you as the choicest

    for the house of Husayn, then adorned the age with you;

and through you revived benevolence, justice, and guidance,

and giving to kinsfolk, and through you destroyed wrongdoing.

You preserved inherited wealth for all your subjects,

and through justice gained them abundant new wealth.

You are generosity's brother, one who gives

to whoever seeks, not one who squanders it wastefully.

The clouds foolishly rival your bounty, then turn back

with a scowling face, their hand now empty.

How great the difference between a face whose water flows into the dust

and your radiant face, which brings mankind to life!

    فَمَن ذا الّذي يَبغي عليّ ومن يَجرا

    My prince, my refuge is at the thresholds of your might;

who, then, would wrong me, and who would dare?

You draped upon my shoulders a Yemeni cloak of favor,

embroidered with honor and marked out for me alone.

    وقَد صَدِيَت عسراً فجلّيتها يسرا

    You unsheathed my thought from the scabbard of idleness;

it had rusted through hardship, and you burnished it with ease.

You made my virtues waft their fragrance from the envier's fire,

so what he meant to fold away was instead spread abroad.

He heaved up sighs, not knowing that they

kindled renown for my merit on a mountain's heights.

My soul has never ceased to hope for a station

with you, around which I see al-Nasr and al-Ghafr.

Through it may I be spared my enemies' plotting, for I

am plunged, because of my merit, into a flood of their folly,

so it bears the fruit of aid, contrary to my requests,

while my nature gathers gratitude to its benefactor as blossoms.

Whoever receives your care is victorious,

and whoever you clothe in awe is never stripped bare.

Here I am, the Hassān of your house, granting

it strength through the bonds of its chosen Salman.

Whoever seeks a house whose pillar of glory is you

fears no mountain thereafter, nor any burden of sin.

    وَلَكِنّني اِستوفرتُ مِن فضلكَ الأجرا

    I sent my praise circling it, yet fell short of it;

but I obtained abundant reward from your bounty.

I attained hopes that became a Mina for slaughtering my enviers,

and won a hand that casts embers into their hearts.

I inflamed those eyes of theirs that had gazed so high,

with the dust of my lead, outstripping everyone who raced.

I quenched the mouths of reciters with a limpid draught

that clothed virgin wine, cooled by the north wind, in words.

I immortalized my pride by praising you, inscribing

your radiant deeds upon the pages of time.

I gilded a robe upon the shoulders of your glory,

whose beauty folded away the ancients' outspread golden poems:

eloquence whose delicacy magic longs to possess,

and poetry nurtured by wisdom that brings Sirius down.

Within it I set an ornament with jewels of your virtues

for the maiden of my thought, that you may give her a generous dowry.

I am not one to offer your glory its equal,

though I offer both verse and prose in praise.

So retain with kindness the noble maidens of my thought,

and release the others with benevolence—without boasting.

Here she is for you, a virgin veiled by modesty,

though I have an excuse for the fault of her delay.

For she was stolen in one respite, then another,

from the fury of an illness that exhausts body and thought.

Perhaps the days will realize that I have complained of them

to you, and feel ashamed and renew their kindness.

    وَفُز وَاِحم وَاِظفر وَاِبلُغ الأملَ الوَعرا

    Live on, rise high, be happy, remain safe forever, and prevail;

win, protect, triumph, and reach the hard-to-attain hope.

May you remain for us, near in bounty and far in reach,

    destroying foes, revealing guidance, reviving the fallen;

baring a resolve that clothes its master in glory,

and making the dark nights heed your radiant days.

May your two hands, in peace and war, never cease to be

ringed on all ten fingertips with glad tidings.
