أَبيتُI spend the night وَليand I have قلبٌa heart مِنَfrom الوجدِpassionate longing مضرمُset aflame
وَدمعٌand tears يُحاكيmimics السحبَthe clouds لكنّهbut it is دمُblood
I spend the night with a heart aflame with longing,
And tears that mimic the clouds, yet they are blood.
أَأَحبابناO our beloveds والهجرُand estrangement حظّيَmy lot منكمُfrom you
فَماso what is wrong لنسيمِwith the breeze اليأسِof despair لاnot يتنسّمُit blows
O our beloveds, estrangement is my lot from you;
Why, then, does the breeze of despair not blow?
أَظنّI think وَفائيmy faithfulness فيin المحبّةlove قاتليmy killer
وَرأيُand the counsel عذوليof my reproacher لَوif تبيّنتI saw clearly أحزمُmore prudent
I think my faithfulness in love will be my death,
And my reproacher's counsel—if I saw clearly—is more prudent.
وَمِنand among عَجَبيmy causes of wonder والقولُwhile speech ملءُfilling مَسامِعيmy ears
تَعاجمهُits becoming unintelligible عنّيto me كأنas though لستI do not أفهمُunderstand
And I marvel, though speech fills my ears,
At its becoming unintelligible to me, as though I did not understand.
إِلىto اللّهGod أَشكوI complain لوعةًburning anguish وصبابةًand ardent yearning
ترقُّit grows tender وَلَكنbut رقّةًa tenderness لَيسdoes not ترحمُshow mercy
To God I complain of anguish and yearning
That grows tender, yet with a tenderness that shows no mercy;
وَقلباًand a heart إِذاwhen أَضحىcomes to be يُنهنههُchecks it الأسىgrief
تَمادىpersists يُناديcalling out أسوتيmy exemplars قدalready تقدّمواthey have gone ahead
And of a heart that, when grief begins to check it,
Persists, calling, “My exemplars have already gone ahead.”
وَصَبراًand patience إِذاwhen اِستنجدتهُI seek its help قالit says ليسthere is no ليfor me
بِحربِin the war الهوىof passionate love طوقٌstrength ولاnor متقحّمُa way to plunge in
And of patience that, when I seek its aid, says, “I have no
Strength in love's war, nor any way to plunge into it.”
أَياO عاذِليmy reproacher ماwhat ليfor me وَللعذلِand with reproach فيهمُconcerning them
فَهلso, is there لكَfor you فيin السلمِpeace الّذيwhich هوit is أسلمُsafer
O my reproacher, what have I to do with reproach over them?
Would you, then, choose peace, which is safer?
