I seek protection for affection's purity from the murk of reproach,
I seek to preserve the purity of affection from the turbidity of reproach,
And for contentment's face from the dust of blame and censure.
And the face of acceptance from the motes of blame and dust.

I entrust to the Merciful a blameless pledge
I entrust to the Merciful a pact absolved,
Upon which estrangement's eye falsely cast the stain of guilt.
From which the eye of estrangement and the stigma of sin have been averted.

I complain to Him of pouring out incoherence
Dragging the tongue of the eloquent, persuasive, sharp-spoken advocate.
That loosens the slanderous, lying, backbiting tongue.

It cowers, fearing to assist and bring together
Against a mute calamity that gives no answer when judgment questions it.
An inarticulate person, if sagacity were to awaken him, he would not awaken.

By my life, from nearby you sent your shot far.

So I said: “Newly arrived from the presence of the beloved!”
And I said, 'Fresh from the beloved's palm.'
And it shook its wings for sheer delight

With all my limbs joining its eager rising.

I never thought that musk was pregnant with reproach,
For musk in its title bears a waft of censure.
While the musk upon its heading breathed an entrancing fragrance.

From a grim sight confronting me with terror.

As coming from a radiant one who lifts the veils?

That I might attain in dreams an understanding of the heart.
Hoping the tumult might become a dream.

Whose unfastened scrolls, when opened, rushed to leap up.
Were vipers that sprang to strike when it was opened.

Flipping my palm, glancing, and heart.
With a fire fanned by a gusting whirlwind.

يهونُis easy علىfor الغرمthe aggrieved man اِنصرامthe severing مودّةٍaffection
لخلّfor a friend فَيجزيهso he repays him بذنبٍwith an offense علىfor الذنبِthe offense
An aggrieved man finds it easy to let affection end
Flattery of a friend is from dignity.
For a friend, repaying his offense with another offense.
When you gain a friend's hand,
وأمّاbut وتجريبيmy experience خبيرis a knowledgeable witness مصدّقٌconfirming
فإنّindeed مداراةgentle handling الصديقthe friend منis among الأربِwisdom
But my experience is a trustworthy, confirming witness:
Entrust him to the care of respect and love.
Handling a friend gently is wisdom.
Prepare for him the bosom of your kindness,
إِذاif ظفرتgain كفّاكyour two hands يوماًone day بصاحبٍa companion
فَأودعهthen place him فيwithin جفنِthe eyelid الرعايةcare والهدبِand eyelashes
If your hands one day gain a companion,
That he might rest on the plenty of your dunes.
Place him within the eyelid and lashes of your care.
If you sense the bitter from him while he is angry,
وَمهّدand prepare لهfor him أكنافthe shelters برّكyour kindness وثرةًsoft
فَإنthen if شمتَyou glimpse منهfrom him الخلبdeceit فاِكتُمهconceal it فيwithin الخلبِthe heart's membrane
Spread the soft shelter of your kindness for him,
Bury it in the bitter, keeping it hidden.
And if you glimpse deceit in him, conceal it within your heart.
Draw good conclusions regarding all his affairs,
وَأجرِand interpret علىas الإدلالِfamiliar confidence كلّall أمورهِhis affairs
وَلاand do not تتعنّتهharass him بتنقيرِwith the prying ذيone possessing رقبِwatchfulness
Interpret all his affairs as familiar confidence,
Not provoking him with the carping of one of high rank.
And do not harass him with a watcher's prying.
Take from him amnesty for deeds and words, discarding
وَخُذand accept منهfrom him عفوthe unforced الفعلdeed والقولand speech واِطّرحand cast aside
مراءًdisputation ولوماًand blame حينwhen ينبوhe recoils وإذand when يُنبيhe causes hurt
Accept his unforced deeds and words, and cast aside
Contention, even if he stirs and rouses you.
Disputation and blame when he recoils or causes hurt.
Release him from the thinness of obligation, embracing him
وحرّرهand free him عنfrom رقّthe bondage التكاليفdemands تَلفهُyou will find him
أخاًa brother مسترقّاًdevoted ذاpossessing اِنتدابٍreadiness إلىfor الحبِّlove
Free him from the bondage of demands, and you will find him
As a loving brother with a duty of affection.
A devoted brother, eagerly answering love's call.
You see obligation is truly a hardship,
وَأَنتand you ترىsee التكليفimposing demands جدّgreat مشقّةٍhardship
وَلوeven if كانit were يُفضيleading للسعادةto happiness عنfrom كثبِnearness
You know that imposing demands is great hardship,
Even if it leads to happiness in the end.
Even if it leads directly to happiness.
Beware of conferring a favor then boasting,
وَإيّاكand beware إنif أسديتَyou bestow للخلّupon the friend منّةًa favor
وَمنّاًof reminders فإنّfor indeed المنّreminding of favors كالنارis like fire فيin الحطبِfirewood
Beware, if you bestow a favor upon a friend,
For boasting is like fire to kindling.
Of reminding him: reminders are fire in firewood.
If you stand higher, speak lowly to him,
إِذاif كنتyou are تعلوهabove him يداًin giving فَاِنخفَضthen lower yourself لهto him
مقالاًin speech وإلّاotherwise اِستبدلhe exchanged الشكرgratitude بالثلبِfor disparagement
If your giving hand stands above his, lower yourself to him
Otherwise, replace gratitude with thanks.
In speech, or he will exchange gratitude for disparagement.
Adorn his hidden and his shame, broadcasting
وَصنand guard سرّهhis secret والعيبand the fault واِنشرand spread ثناءهhis praise
وَصلهand keep contact with him دوالاًin turns بالزيارةthrough visits والكتبِand letters
Guard his secret and his fault, and spread his praise;
His praise, visiting and writing to him.
Keep contact with him through visits and letters in turn.
Thus you perpetuate love with every friend,
بِذاby this تَستديمُyou perpetuate الودّaffection منfrom كلّevery صاحبٍcompanion
وَتستلّand draw out أعراقَthe roots السخيمةِresentment منfrom خبِّa deceitful man
Thus you perpetuate affection from every companion,
Drawing the pillars of devotion from hidden springs.
And draw resentment's roots from a deceitful heart.
Do not make your friend a witness against himself,
وَلاand never provoke into a lapse تَستزلنَّthe beloved الحبيبbefore witnesses شهادةًpublicly
ولاand do not تَكُbe جاسوساًa spy علىupon الغيبِthe hidden بالعيبِfor faults
Do not provoke your beloved into a lapse before witnesses,
Nor spy on privacy to expose its faults.
Nor spy upon his hidden life in search of faults.
Tie back the wandering compliance with gentle speech,
وَقيّدand bind بلينِwith gentleness القولِspeech شاردةthe fleeing الرضاcontentment
وأكّدand strengthen بفرطِwith abundant الإحترامrespect عرىthe bonds الحبِّlove
Bind fleeing contentment with gentle speech,
Confirm wayward affection with utmost respect.
And strengthen love's bonds with abundant respect.
Shame coldness with indulgence, discarding
وَأَخجلand shame جفوّاًa harsh man بالمداراةthrough tact واِطّرحand cast aside
رعونةthe folly نفسٍa soul فيin المكافاةrepayment بالريبِwith suspicions
Shame a harsh man through tact, and cast aside
The stubbornness of soul in reciprocation and doubt.
The soul's folly in repaying him with suspicion.
There is no peace if wrong is met with coldness,
فَلاfor no راحةٌease إنif قوبلis answered الذنبُthe fault بالجفاwith estrangement
وَلاand no سُؤددٌnobility إنif جُوزيis repaid الذنبُthe fault بالذنبِwith a fault
There is no ease if a fault is answered with estrangement,
No contentment if wrong is repaid with wrong.
Nor nobility if a fault is repaid with a fault.
Be balanced between discord and its opposite,
وَكُنand be وسطاًmoderate بينَbetween الشقاقdiscord وضدّهand its opposite
فإنّfor indeed نفاقاًhypocrisy أَنis to توافقagree عنafter عقبِturning back
Take a middle course between discord and its opposite,
For hypocrisy is agreeing without conviction.
For agreement after turning back is hypocrisy.
Beware of showing affection then turning from it,
وَإيّاكand beware والإدلالof overfamiliar presumption واِحذرand fear معادهُits outcome
وَلاand never trust تأمَننthe imminence وشكchange التقلّبfrom منa heart قلبِa heart
Beware of overfamiliar presumption, and fear its outcome;
Trust not the turning of hearts from persuasion.
Never trust a heart against swift change.
My speech imparts these counsels, humoring
نصائحcounsels جاريتُI answered الكتابthe letter ببثّهاby expressing them
مُجاراةas the response مغضٍone overlooking مغمضِlowering الطرفthe gaze عنout of رجبِreverence
These are counsels with whose expression I answered the letter,
One whose eye is closed to meaningful address.
As one who overlooks and lowers his eyes out of reverence.
That befit the lamb's gentleness and the wolf's grasp.
فدونكso take نُصحاًcounsel فيwithin عتابٍreproach ومدحةًand praise
تُؤلّفjoining بينbetween الشاةِthe lamb فيin اللطفِgentleness والذئبِand the wolf
Take counsel within reproach, and praise
I incorporated praise then extracted it,
Joining the lamb's gentleness with the wolf.
Like a sword sheathed in ornamental carving.
فأدمجتُso I folded فيهwithin it المدحpraise ثمّthen مَحَضتهُmade it pure
كماas صيغَwas cast تبراًin gold غمدthe sheath ذيone possessing زخرفٍadornment عضبِa keen blade
I folded praise into it, then made praise pure,
If hesitation disturbed you before today,
As an adorned keen sword's sheath is cast in gold.
Doubt has now departed without veil.
فإنif يكُthere was قبلbefore اليومِtoday خامركmingling with you اِمتراdoubt
فقدthen indeed برحdeparted اليومtoday الخفاءُconcealment بلاwithout حجبِveils
If doubt had mingled with you before today,
Your tongue liberally laces me with pure praise,
Today concealment has departed, with no veils remaining.
And your eyes uplift me to the height of dignity.
حَباكَbestowed upon you لسانُthe tongue المجدِglory خالصةَthe purest الثناpraise
وَأَولتكand granted you أبصارthe eyes العلىgreatness غايةthe utmost الرجبِreverence
Glory's tongue bestowed pure praise upon you,
Another may reveal in earnest and jest
And greatness's eyes granted you the utmost reverence.
A nature inclined from love and ties.
وغيرُكand others than you منare those whose تُبديshow الجفاءestrangement طباعهnatures
ويعدلand stray فيin جدٍّearnest وهزلٍand jest عنfrom اللحبِthe clear road
It is others whose natures show estrangement,
Your gentle ways refuse to alarm a loyal one,
And who stray from the clear road in earnest and in jest.
The prosperous exclusively enjoy your company.
وَلُطفكand your graciousness يأبىrefuses أنthat تروعyou frighten موالياًa loyal friend
وَيستأثرand monopolize السرّاءhappiness فيكwithin yourself عنaway from الصحبِcompanions
Your graciousness refuses to frighten a loyal friend,
Never let the reproach dim the gaze of affection,
Or to reserve happiness for yourself, withholding it from companions.
For the fruits of reproach are cooling of love.
فَلاso never eclipse تَكسفَنwith reproach بالعتبِthe gaze نظرةhis affection ودّهِhis affection
فإنّfor indeed مثارthe stirring العتبreproach مربدةdarkens الحبِّlove
Do not eclipse with reproach the gaze of his affection,
If I say it was merely a chance slip,
For reproach's stirring darkens love.
Is there anything for you but pardon for lapses?

And if I say, 'Yet it was a deliberate lapse,'
Those you love - how dear their lives are to you!
What can you do but pardon a stumbling lapse?
If I said those who love you - I would guard all who love!

May whoever fights those he loves be your ransom;
If it were possible, in redeeming lives,
Had I said, 'Whoever fights you,' I would alarm those who love you.
I would ransom mine for their alarged spans!

If it were possible among your ransomers for you to possess
If what pleases you deprives me of dignity,
Their lifetimes, I would include myself in the count.
Dignity has shunned me, and resolve has spurned me.

If your wish deprives me of comfort,
May sleep shun my side and the bedding repel it.
I have eschewed roses, thirsting.

To bring you joy - how bitter was its taste!
While thirsty I would shun approaching water to drink.
Still it lingers in me, terrifying.

Congratulations that I still quiver from it,
And may its assault of terror remain upon me.
And he who would end it meets grave affliction.

And may it please you that, from its impact, I continually
Grant that it was a slight, like a gentle pat -
Suffer painful distress, and from its withdrawal too.
Was it not met with utmost refinement and dignity?

Suppose it was an unavoidable blow:
In one noble of promise and love there is mediation
Why not administer it with kindly, gentle care?
For my sin - sins preclude my nearness.

Cherish one whom you tested while he was angry,
In the course of mind, resolve, and argument
And found a friend both far away and near.
There is such gentleness as keeps the bond of love.

Single him out for the affection of which you are worthy,
O my neighbor who has wronged me with insult!
And proclaim his special distinction among companions.
After estrangement, I crave the warmth of your love.

You will find him noble, grateful for kindness,
Be merciful to me, whatever your counsel;
And faithful, even if fidelity leads to destruction.
In my life, your judgment of me brings healing.

The kindling of his breast dispersed affection's perfume,
I attempt to rouse affection with contention,
And love's seeker at the fire laid bare his pure gold.
Yet rousing love with contention is futile.

How often people before have struck my flint,
You made us drink the bitter cup of reproach,
And it withheld, yielding neither spark nor outpouring!
Now replace it with sweet.

But when the staff was shaken in your right hand,
Without your precedence I would stray, baffled,
It burst springs from it like torrents.
From the difficult path to reunion.

Their qualities poured out, for the children of my thought,
My pen is a champion whose thrusts
Clouds through which they might learn where lineage ends.
No formidable foe can deflect in battle.

My expectation—and above expectation, your pledge—is that you prove
With leisure he hurls his spears -
Jealous of a friend's honor against one who chews upon companions.
He is the starling, though he bites clay like a viper.

I witnessed, though I had known your palm as a deep sea,
He is the lance, steady, not quivering,
The wonder of seas set ablaze by their surging.
The arrow, though not flying astray.

If I distrust what my eyes see in you, it is fitting;
A perilous weapon, a penetrating stroke,
Otherwise, I have no further desire to remain alive.
Pure, polished, sharpened at the point.

I hold you above attaching a lapse to your pledge,
It clarifies pure white from the dark folds of the mute
And deem you too great to abase a noble man through disparagement.
And washes away the motes from sleepy eyes.

Is there not, in a noble pledge and affection, an intercessor
It straightens the crooked tracks of the devious
For my fault? Indeed, the fault should prevent my censure.
And breaks the exaggerated fancies of the arrogant.
أَماis there not فيin جريِّthe boldness الرأيِjudgment والعزمِand resolve والحِجاand understanding

Is there not, in bold judgment, resolve, and understanding,
It deafens the hearing of the stubbornly deaf
Enough gentleness to preserve love's covenant?
And severs the forms of figurative speech.

As if watchful eyes, when it flows,
Toward me, yet in whose love I find repose!
Squint at it, blackness coveting it.

Your mercy after estrangement! And if
As if enamored hearts wish
You have concern for my life, my cure lies with you.
Their black bile were dyed by it.

Is affection to be roused from me with a spear?
If you unleash it at a target, it returns a nightingale,
It is folly to awaken affection through war.
If the lofty scorn it, it remains a flame.

You passed us the bitter cup of reproach;
You see the peacock's tail as an arrow that matches
Return with reconciliation's sweet accompaniment for it.
Its beak in piercing the neck's nape.

Indeed, by God, were it not for following you,
It overtakes the edge of the lightning in the sky,
The seeker of union would lose his way on a difficult path.
And exposes the torrents on the plateau's face.

For I have a lancer of pens whom no
It is the faded and withered that, if imbued
Dread of a mighty man unsettles when he ranges in war.
With a drop in the tail, would leaf out lushly.

It is the predecessor giving light, though its precededness
Though it is a flickering-tongued serpent biting upon poison.
To the course is credited for its advantage.

It is a lance, except that it does not tremble;
It was selected from pure, highbred, untiring steeds
It is an arrow, but neither misses nor falls short.
That do not weary at swimming, nor tire at running.

Rudayni in its strokes, leveled and straightened;
Habituated, when not distracted by love,
A sharpened penetrator whose feathers a skilled hand has bound.
To never deviate from firm principles.

It fears, if you one day yield it your hand,
And clears eyelids' grit with lodging arrow-feathers.
The assembly of minds in the field of wonders.

And the inclination to vanity of one inclined to vanity.
So speak of the rumbling, surging, stormy sea!

As though gazing eyes, when it runs,
Dunes, expanses, meadows, plateau or dale,
Gifted it their hidden blackness, watching intently.

Their inmost black core might become its coloring dye.

If greatness summons it, it becomes a shooting star.
