I never thought my mind could be stirred and bewitched
My lips did not cease to provoke and enchant
Until the dark-eyed Babylonian gazed at me.
Until the charming Babylonian smiled at me

A manuscript gazes at me with a wild-ox calf's eye,
With an alluring glance from his hazel eyes
And from it a lion in its lair charges at me.
And a sedated lion pounced at me from him

His glances suddenly flirted with me
No, rather, they raided me where I was unguarded.
Rather, they raided me when I least expected

Writing—yet its lines are its spears;
It's but a line, though its phrases are spears
A garden—yet it blossoms with eloquence.
A garden, though eloquently flourishing

I never thought, when I gathered some of its fruits
I did not hesitate, when I plucked its fruits
With my gaze, that they held intoxicating wine.
With a glance, to sniff the intoxicating fragrance

Whose eyes were clouded and who fell into bewilderment,
Whose sights are veiled and bewildered

I would have kept, even as I felt its paper
I would have lingered, touching his parchment
With my hand, saying, 'I see it as an intoxicant handed down.'
Saying I see it as intoxicating nectar

O Mahdi, seal of glorious virtues
The banners of glorious deeds are unfurled,
Whose wraps unfurl the flags of pride

You gifted me a parchment inscribed
With noble deeds of excellence that cannot be concealed.
With virtues of glory that cannot be concealed

It brought to light for us, through the seven compositions within it,
You presented to the seven constructs therein
The sea of poetry—indeed, they themselves are seas.
A sea of poetry, truly they are oceans

I wondered if among them a sphere in which
A celestial sphere whose seven brilliant stars shine
The seven gleaming planets blossom

From every verse that, when ascribed to its builder,
In each verse, if attributed to its founder
Grows august, like the house of his namesake?
Becomes like his name, grandly arrogant

People's hearts yearn toward its dwelling,
Hearts in the world swoon to its chant
And the devout man turns his face toward it.
And the righteous turn their faces to it

I wondered how it came to me, though I've never
That, if I went to them, I would come away empty-handed.
Ceased to pursue it until I grew weary

A cherished wish: since attaining it, I have not rendered
A wish I've held since containing it
Due thanks—no wonder, when every part dazzles.
With thanks or wonder and all dazzles

It rose upon me at dusk, so I said: that
A moon bearing the aspect of the Pleiades.'
Is a moon with a jewel-adorned appearance

My soul rejoiced at its rise and creation's realms
Humankind ceased rejoicing at its rising.
Still rejoice at its rising and gleam

But I lived for it while my eyelid wavered
Then turned away, my mind's eye wearier still.
Then recoiled while my pensive eye saddened

As though what I had pressed from its grape-cluster
It was as if the extract I wrung from its vines
Were wine over which long ages had passed.
Was a spirit that came to me for ages pressed

Gently, Abu Ishaq, none in the earth, striving
Dares to climb to the Pleiades.
To rise to the celestial spheres, dares

Seven astonishing long poems fall short.

And I mentioned some of my poems delighted you
Pleased you, though they are but a little dung-heap taken for greenery.
Though they are miserable and turn green

Wait—look again: what you admired
Wait, look again, for what pleased you thus
Is a swelling, and what seems great may be admired.
May be conceit though the arrogant pleases

And a hasty effort in circumstances that grow difficult.

To market my beads where that jewel is found.
For vain ostentation, while you are the jewel

You have presented me with masterpieces from it
Which no poet would attempt to attain.
That no poet will attempt to attain

And had you reckoned them a favor upon us
That would have sufficed; yet you sought something greater.
It would suffice, but you sought what is greater

For one is not excused for delaying a duty.
For delaying duty cannot be excused

Me to set in verse, scant though it may be.

Due to obstacles in its folds, consulting me,
My verse; one kept waiting may take fright.
My words, though the consultant may seem rude

And poets' creative faculties are like milk-bearing she-camels:
And the poets' instincts are like conceptions
They do not yield their milk of verse at every moment.
Not every time does poetry flow readily

That now blazes like the fire of your namesake.
To become like your consuming blaze
