أَما والّذي قد قدّرَ البعدَ بيننا

أَما والّذي قد قدّرَ البعدَ بيننا

وَأَطمَعني في القربِ وهو بعيدُ

وَأَطمَعني في القربِ وهو بعيدُ

By Him who ordained the distance between us,

Lo, by the One who has decreed separation between us,

and made me hope for nearness, though it is remote;

and made me hope for nearness, though it is far away,

وَنعّمَ بِالتأميلِ فيكُم حُشاشتي

وَنعّمَ بِالتأميلِ فيكُم حُشاشتي

وعذّبني بِالشوقِ وهو شديدُ

وعذّبني بِالشوقِ وهو شديدُ

who gladdened my innermost being with hopes of you,

and gladdened what remains of my life with hope in you,

and tormented me with longing, so fierce;

and tormented me with yearning, fierce as it is,

وَصيّرني مَهما أشُمُّ نَسيمكم

وَصيّرني مَهما أشُمُّ نَسيمكم

أَشحّ بِأنفاسي فَلست أجودُ

أَشحّ بِأنفاسي فَلست أجودُ

who made me, whenever I catch the scent of your breeze,

and made me, whenever I inhale your breeze,

hoard my breaths and refuse to give them freely.

وَأَحسَبها حرّاءَ حتّى إِذا عَلَت

أَشدُّ بِقلبي راحَتي وأميدُ

I think them burning hot; then, when they rise,

and I deem them burning hot, until, when they rise,

I grip my palm with my hand and reel.

I press my palm to my heart and sway—

لَقَد ذابَ قَلبي في اِشتياقي إِليكمُ

لَقَد ذابَ قَلبي في اِشتياقي إِليكمُ

وَجادَت بهِ عينٌ عليَّ جمودُ

وَجادَت بهِ عينٌ عليَّ جمودُ

Indeed, my heart has melted in my longing for you,

my heart has indeed melted in my yearning for you,

and an eye, though dry toward me, has poured it forth.

and an eye that withheld its tears from me poured it forth.

وَما ذابَ حتّى لانَ بِالبينِ حدّهُ

وَما ذابَ حتّى لانَ بِالبينِ حدّهُ

على أنّهُ في النائباتِ جليد

على أنّهُ في النائباتِ جليد

It did not melt until separation softened its edge,

And it did not melt until separation softened its edge,

though amid calamities it remains steadfast.
