أَفِقawake أيّهاO المغرورُdeluded one بِالعيشby life قَدhas صفاgrown serene
وَبالشملِand by the gathered circle مَوفوراًundiminished وَبالأمنِand by safety قَدhas ضفاgrown abundant
Awake, you beguiled by life grown serene,
Awaken, O you deluded by life, for the horizon has cleared,
and by your circle kept whole, and safety grown abundant.
With abundance of kinship and overflowing security.
فَماfor ... not هادمُdestroyer اللذّاتِof pleasures مبقٍsparing علىtoward فتىa young man
وَلاand no لذّةٌpleasure للعيشِin life وَهوwhile he is علىon شَفاa brink
For the destroyer of pleasures spares no young man,
The destroyer of pleasures remains not for the youth,
nor is there pleasure in life while he stands on the brink.
And life has no pleasure while on the brink.
تَبسّطتِspread wide الآمالُhopes فيwithin ضيقِthe narrowness of عيشةٍa life
تَسارَعتhastened الآجالُappointed ends فيهاwithin it تخوّفاin dread
Hopes spread wide within a narrow life;
Hopes expanded in the straitness of living,
appointed ends hasten within it, amid dread.
Yet lifetimes hastened therein out of fear.
فَلاso ... not تتركَare left behind الأهواءُdesires إلّاexcept فَجاءةًsuddenly
وَلاand ... not تُنزعُare wrested away الأرواحُsouls إلّاexcept تَخطّفاby snatching
So desires are left behind only without warning,
Desires depart only suddenly,
and souls are wrested away only in a sudden snatch.
And souls are seized only abruptly.
أَيُخدعُis ... deceived? بِالآمالِby hopes مرءٌa man مصيرهُhis fate

مَصيرُthe fate of الّذيthe one whom قَدhas ضمّenfolded ذاthis التربearth والصفاand smooth rock
Can a man be beguiled by hopes, when his fate
Can one be fooled by hopes when his fate
is the fate of the one this earth and smooth rock have enfolded?
Is the fate of one the dust and stones have gathered?

And he exerted himself for the goals of virtues,
so in them he held both inherited glory and glory newly won.
Thus he became therein a source of pride, adorned.

He rose, and how he rose, in glory, honor, and eminence,
He ascended in pride, dignity, and happiness,
and handled every affair well.
And was excellent in all his affairs and management.

And he firmly planted affection in every heart,
And he exemplified in all hearts an affection
which clothed him in richly patterned wealth of faith and worldly life.
That clothed him in richness of religion and ample worldly goods.

And from it, since the morning of his passing, he has witnessed
And from it he saw, since the morning of his passing,
prayer vying with grief and anguished longing.
A prayer that rivals sorrow and ardence.

So stand, O passerby, beside his tomb,
So stand, O passerby, around his burial place,
and let this moving impression there suffice to make you pause;
And consider this influence on him as stations.
