ويجرحُ قلبَ الحُرِّ خُذلانُ صاحبٍ

ويجرحُ قلبَ الحُرِّ خُذلانُ صاحبٍ

وقد ظن كل الظنِّ : أن ليس يخذلُه

And a friend's abandonment wounds a noble man's heart,

A friend's betrayal wounds the free man's heart

Though he had been utterly certain his friend would not abandon him.

Though he was certain, beyond all doubt, that he'd not be let down

يراه مع النُّعمى لصيقًا مؤانسًا

يراه مع النُّعمى لصيقًا مؤانسًا

ويلقاه في البلوى كمن كان يجهلُه !!!

ويلقاه في البلوى كمن كان يجهلُه !!!

In prosperity he sees him close beside him, keeping him company,

He sees him sticking with the fortunate, companionable

And in adversity he meets him like one who had never known him.

And finds him in adversity as one who never knew him
