Say to him who stretched out his hands in the scorching noon heat,

asking for a drop of water from a pool,

asking for a sip of shade from a fragrance

that God spread over the lush garden:

You are not alive if you beg for its hills

and stretch out your palm to beg for life.

Be a scorching heat whose blaze the fire fears,

not a breeze whose fragrance startles illusion.

    تنسخ النار ربيعً في ضحاهْ

    And plunge with your self into the terrors of the blaze;

you will turn the fire into springtime, in whose morning light

a brook laughs with pure, sweet water.

Say to him who shackled life's yearnings,

seeking its secret before taking a step,

standing still, his hands paralyzed over the secret,

and seek the secret before the journey.

Be a road of nectar and sparks,

not a standstill that toys with images.

    And go forth with your self toward what you cannot see;

you will behold the secret, revealed and manifest,

having laid down its staff upon your breast.

Say to him who listened to the nightingale's lament,

a lover weeping over the loss of hope,

    melting in his burning despair,

plucking the flowers of a barren autumn:

You are not alive if you seek out weeping

as a cup that gives you illusions of hope to drink.

Be a song that sets heaven's passion aflame,

    not a lament's echo from annihilation's lyre.

    تبصر الكون طيورًا من ضياءْ

    And pour out your self through a blazing reed flute;

you will see the universe as birds of light,

    cooing above the brook's bank.

Say to him who bowed his head to anyone but God,

and to him who poured his cup for anyone but God,

fearfully drinking his own soul from his palms,

    and unable to feel pleasure:

You are not alive if you imagine existence

as masters who herded slaves across the earth.

Ask the self: you will find in it that prostration

to any but God is winds and stubble.

And ask God for whom He made His sun rise:

for none but the free has it kindled fuel

for the East's morning, or watered its yesterday.

Gabriel spread a wing in the nebula

and called the spheres and stars to listen

to its free echo in the fetters of dust,

while he swooped upon it like a meteor

and saw its prostration amid the ruins,

on Andalusia's hills, watering the domes

with nectar from which the vines still

press enchantment and sing of homecoming.

And the stroke of Moses calls forth its glory:

Al-Dakhil's palm returned with its fruit,

after he made its soil tremble with the reed flute

    and with the spirit's tears sang and watered it;

    تسمع التاريخ خلف الحجبِ

so it grew in shade, dates, and lips.

You hear history behind the veils

waking the days from their overpowering slumber

with a radiance that shone among the Arabs,

and a book that inscribed the earth's guidance.

    فإذاهُ سجدةٌ بين يديهِ

    And Cordoba's soil yearned for him;

and behold, it lay prostrate before him,

and behold, the prayer niche listened intently to him.

Love's chant shone from his lips,

while he was a lyre from the East, singing

and restoring glory, melody after melody:

Tariq, in his might, behind the shield,

and Ibn Abbad, and what he endured in prison,

and the Alhambra's sorrow pouring down before him

in elegies no ear had ever tasted,

poured forth by anguish from his two sides.

Bird of Islam, echo a melody

Set aflame the reed flute that shook the heavens

    ومن الخلد تلفّت ها هنا

    and watered the depths with inspired song;

and from eternity turn your gaze here:

you will find the shackles falling around us.

We have reaped slavery from our horizons,

and melted the fetters off our necks,

and called upon God in our dawning

to restore the East to freedom, as

it once was, reaching for the fiercest hopes,

pressing out light and watering the darkness.
