My God, there is still a secret in the reed flute,

and a shore of revelation I have not visited.

Nor has my bewilderment drunk a melody from it,

nor on any day have I come to it with my bewilderment.

Deep as a dream of visions in imagination,

upon the soul's slumber I shrouded it.

It hid itself and let its melodies fall

upon a string I had cut apart,

and I burned within it the springtime of life,

and from the heart's slumber I bade it farewell.

    Deep, yet it floats,

    near whenever I remember it.

And its memory is in all that I desire,

and in everything I have loved passionately.

I see it upon the blossoms, yet I

take it unawares when it shakes hands with fragrance.

I see it upon the river, yet I

leave it when it embraces the waves.

I see it upon the spreading trees, yet I

part from it when it sways the bough.

I see it upon the horizon as something that shone,

and from the bier of my fire I imagined it.

    تجسَّد حتّى تأمَّلتهُ

    I see it upon the wind as the voice of longing;

it took form until I contemplated it.

And I beheld in it imagination's shrine,

upon a temple I had declared forbidden.

And I laid it in sunset's funeral bier,

a meeting with the unseen I had arranged with it.

I see it within myself in every whisper,

and in every apparition I have imagined.

I see it walking with me through life,

a hidden being, and I have kept it company.

And I shared with it all the sustenance of stillness,

and all love when I loved it sincerely,

and all the morning and all the evening,

and all the night-darkness when I mingled with it,

and all the wounds and all the lamentation,

and all the sorrow, if I sipped it,

and all the ether and all the fragrance,

and all destiny, when I was it.

And in every atom of this existence,

I see it as a ringing sound I listened closely to,

and I listened within it and repeated it,

as an existence for my own self that I concealed.

My God, from where do I yearn toward it,

when I have lost my path to beholding it,

and made it burst forth within my time as time,

and carried it on as wandering upon wandering?

And it was nothing but the song of conjectures,

and a sorrow of love that I disturbed.

And I kindled in it the rebab's prayer,

singing my time, though I have not tasted it.

I dissolved along every path, and so I do not

feel anything but the distance I have surpassed.

And I ventured deep until it gave me the road to drink,

the dregs of an enchantment I had imagined.

It scorched me and left the ashes of radiance,

and still it is glowing embers I have craved.

    Everything smiled in its fire,

and my reed flute's sighing, as I came to it,

roars upon the wind: no lull,

nor shade—a shade I have wished for,

nor a hush where imagination blows,

in which it sings what I was taught.

I sought tranquility in every ember

that I kindled upon the heart's string.

And I have no hand in it save an echo,

as the soul hears it, so it gives it back.

My song, and it is from me, yet I have no path

to it; so wherever it came from, I led it.

Through it I heard the hut beneath the darkness,

as a wail of misery that I sang,

    أساها بنايي تجرَّعتهُ

    and cups of bondage in the tyrants' palm;

their sorrow I swallowed through my reed flute.

And God's hand paralyzed their tyrant,

with a dawn upon the Nile that I hallowed.

So in it I sang in harmony with life's uprising,

with magic from God that I received by inspiration.

And I praised God when the light appeared

and crushed the darkness I had lived through.
