طرِبthrilled الخيالthe imagination لأنّةat the moan الشادوفِthe shaduf (water-lifting lever)
Leave your lilting melody unplayed;
Let your cheerful tune be unaccompanied,
Imagination thrilled to the shaduf's moan.
Free the imagination for it is exuberant.
عريانnaked جرّدهstripped him الضحىthe morning منof سترهhis covering
فغداso he became يضجّclamoring بدمعهwith his tears المذروفِshed
Naked—the morning stripped him of his covering,
The dawn stripped it bare of its cover,
So he began clamoring with his shed tears.
So it began to scream with flowing tears.

يختالstruts فيin بهجٍsplendor ولمحand a gleam شفوفtranslucent
The robe of radiance, draped over him, did not please him,
The dress of splendor did not please it as a wrapper,
Strutting in splendor and a translucent gleam.
Strutting about in delight and glimpses of passion.

So he wept and bowed his head in humility,
So it wept and hung its head in humility,
Grieving like a distraught lover.
Lamenting like a fervent lover.

So when he leans back, you fancy him, in his silence,
If it lingered in its solitude silently,
The corpse of a crucified man without hands.
A crucified corpse without shrouds.

تُبليهِwearing him away فيin سخطٍwrath وفيand in تعنيفِharsh rebuke
The nights severed his forearms and set about
The nights tore off its arms and leapt up
Wearing him away in wrath and harsh rebuke.
Wearing it down in wrath and rebuke.

And when he kneels, you find him a worshipper,
And if it kneeled, I found it worshipping,
His inmost thoughts cleansed of pretense.
Its secrets purified of hypocrisy.

His prostrations in the spring are a love-stricken one's kiss,
Its prostrations at the spring were kisses of devotion
Imprinted on its sweet, sipped water.
Imprinted on the chain of the unleashed.

Parched, he offered the roses his drink,
The streams offered the flowers its drink
And lent his tears to the countryside's heart.
And lent its tears to the heart of the countryside.

So he stays thirsty and naked, while the flowers are
So it remains thirsty, naked, while the flowers
Quenched, and the field's plants wear striped finery.
Bloom, and the field’s plants grow lush.

أعمىa blind man علىon جُرُفٍa precipice هنالكِthere موفيpoised at the edge
Resting over the deep well, as though he were
Collapsing on the deep ravine as if
A blind man there, poised on a precipice.
A blind man on the verge of a fatal fall.

A giant—death terrified him, and so shrank
The havoc frightened the tyrant so his ribs
His ribs beneath terror's staggering blow.
Shrank from the blow of terror.

ضجرتgrew restless لهولٍat a horror فيin القبورthe graves مخيفfrightening
So, in fancy, you imagine him a demon's shield,
It imagined itself in a fanciful delirium
Restless at a frightful horror in the graves.
An ogre wearied of the horrors in graves.

برمتgrew weary بحتفٍof a death فارتمتso it flung itself بحتوفinto deaths
So it lent the shrouds the fury of one enraged,
So the shrouds lent the fury of a wrathful one
Weary of one death, it flung itself into many deaths.
Who dies with a single stroke and drops into a pit.

O silent one, while the wind flutters around him,
O silent one, while the wind flutters around
And the spring delights him with a gentle cooing,
And the stream excites it with hushed verse,

And the crows' clamoring warns his meadow
The cawing of crows warns of its doom
Of crops cut down by a dust-laden wind, and autumn's drought;
With ruinous drought and arid autumn.

And the shepherd's rebab lulls, beside him,
And the shepherd’s flute lulls it nearby
A heart enraptured by her played melody.
A heart that strays with its composed tune.

Drunk on the melodies, her singing intoxicated
Intoxicated by the melodies, its singing inebriated
The ears of a bleating animal and the hearing of a lamb.
Ears longing and hearing benumbed.

Why did a sigh from a wretched man not move you—
If only a gust from a miserable one
Distraught, enfolded in hunger's shelter,
Yearning in the bosom of valleys wrapped,
رَوَّىwatered الزّرُوعَthe crops بِصَيِّبٍwith a downpour مِنْof دَمْعِهِhis tears

Who watered the crops with a downpour of his tears,
Watered the plants with a shower of his tears,
And remained in darkness with an anguished heart?
And dwelled with a heart in the darkest gloom.
