From your precious blood I kindled the anthem,

O you who lie beneath the shades of immortality.

If you are not the inspiration for my poetry, then who

Inspires the song of night but the martyr?

A word that, whenever it rings in a listener's ear,

Makes the world grow light and all existence soar.

When it rises, the fetter takes it,

On the lips of acclaim, for the roar of lions.

So steel is terrified by its horror,

And the neck-shackle is shattered, and the fetters wear away.

    Unarmed! No sword, no dagger,

Yet with his spirit he broke the iron.

A free man, he saw the homelands shackled,

    Forced by the usurper to drink the humiliation of slaves;

And the Nile, despite the coveted, paradisal abundance

Of its sweet-flowing water upon the land,

Had become colocynth for the homeland's thirsty,

    Bitter, yet inviting to the enemy who comes to drink;

And the spacious garden upon its bank

    Almost perished, grief-stricken, from questioning.

It says: “O planter, why do I see

My blossoms in a hand that bestowed no labor on me?

My fragrance blooms upon its fingertips,

While thorns in your two flanks rend the livers.

And the shade is a bed of desire for the foe,

While you languish in the heat of the uplands.

They have frightened my birds within their nests,

So they flew into the thickets like a fugitive,

Bewildered, with neither nest nor grove,

While those people rest at ease in soft cradles.

And they jostled the Nile, then built for it

From their crowding the worst of dams.

In everything they have an ambition,

And a great yearning, and a fierce passion.

If they lit a fire and were not supplied

With withered firewood, we would be the fuel.”

O you who saw Egypt suffer wasting sickness

In the grip of the arrogant, obstinate West:

A guest came to her as a visitor at dusk,

Then pitched his tents beside the borders.

And morning dawned upon her misfortune,

So a covenant fell, and pledges were betrayed.

And the guest became master there,

And all the rest who lived there were slaves.

And lo, a spirit from among her sons coursed forth,

Pure of heart, like the spirit of a newborn.

A free man, he saw the shackles fastened tight,

Secured in the collar by an ungrateful guest.

So he sprang up like a whirlwind, with a cry

That vanquishes the thunder's rumble in the valley.

With an unarmed palm, yet it

Terrifies the envier's heart with truth.

Soft, it raged against the homeland's fetter,

Fierce in might, like unyielding rock.

And he said, with death upon his palm:

“Do not fear, O Egypt: I am a martyr.”

And he fell face-down upon the earth:

The sanctity of piety and the purity of prostration.

A ray of truth from his eyelid

    Leaves a beacon guiding existence.

And a flutter died upon his lips,

At which the lofty, firm-set mountains nearly swayed.

    A heavenly anthem that became

In the world of melodies a new tune.

From his grave, it harmonizes with the birds

In the courtyard of the dead, with a distant melody.

He cries, while the blood upon his body

Is a sheer robe that puts ample mantles to shame:

“O Egypt, do not weep over my death

Ever, for I am bound for immortality.

My solace in the dust, O my nation, is not

A gleaming marble slab and a lofty tomb.

My bones will not rest within my grave,

Nor will the spirit enjoy a life of ease,

Unless you become sacrifices for your dreams,

And march behind my caravan as fuel.

Either a free life in the homeland,

Or else have mercy on the graves sleeping around me.

My spirit hovers over you forever,

Watching for efforts devoted to the homelands.

Do not deceive me, in your tributes,

With the luster of words and the magic of verse.

For glory lies in casting forth your souls,

Do not dread, amid the fire, the terror of threats,

And shatter the fetter with them; indeed, I

Hear the clank of iron within the shrouds.”
