What ails Egypt after so long a voyage,

that her ship has halted upon the Heights?

And affairs have indeed become clear, yet her plight

lies in deepest darkness, black with shrouding gloom.

They said, 'Peace!' I said, 'Before your peace

come the clash of keen swords and blood-gushing spears.'

By God, peace has never prevailed in a world

where the weak were denied fair treatment.

Those entrusted with peace have ruled in ways

that leave peace shaken on every side.

They ruled, and from the first signs of their judgment

the scent of gushing blood wafted to anyone who sniffed.

They tossed the case into wastebaskets—will it be heard

on Judgment Day, the day of appeal?

Tell those whose deliberations have dragged on:

morning is not hidden from the clear-sighted.

Why deliberate? The sun's disk requires no

    searchlight for its beholder.

Kingdoms were deceived by honeyed promises,

reaping nothing but the bitterness of broken pledges.

Was the Atlantic Charter a tale—

    imaginary, its edges tightly woven?

    يا للرياء وثوبِه الشَّفَّاف!

    Egypt's case exposed the cloak of their hypocrisy;

what hypocrisy—and what a transparent cloak!

Our free allies, once they had made examples

of their foes, turned upon their allies.

    Seventy years in unending occupation—

    alas for Egypt—what lean years!

A guest came to her, then became her master,

then violated the dignity of his generous host.

They said, 'The Nile is independent,' while the occupier

is borne on shoulders in its valley.

Indeed, bondage has but one taste,

even if its forms are many.

By my life, we are not free so long as there appears

even a phantom of their faces.

O sons of our father in the south, a greeting

like blossoms crowned with shimmering dew.

In Egypt are your kindred; nowhere else

    have you kin or forebears.

The Nile has joined us with its pure water,

as drinking companions bond around choice wine.

    Two milk-brothers—nothing separates us

in status but the law of injustice.

Let no schemers deceive you with falsehood

from their speech, sweet to taste but deadly poison.

The foreigner in our land and yours

is like a cloud in the clear, open sky.

Whoever follows the intruder is hypnotized

while awake, stripped of will, asleep.

If the intruder's generosity deceives him, how often

has a camel calf been slaughtered with the fodder-dealer's knife!

Join rank to rank, and sharpen

the bright blades of resolve with utmost keenness.

Hopes are like beautiful women: their custom

is never to yield to the idle and weak.

    كلاَّ، ولا عدلُ القُضاة بكاف

    Plain right does not prevail by itself;

no, nor is the justice of judges enough.

    Right needs a vigilant champion,

as a sword needs the swordsman's hand.

And calamities have indeed banded against the homeland,

while its sons are held hostage to internecine strife and discord.

What harm if everyone forgot themselves,

so unclouded affection might return after estrangement!

Disparate factions aiming at one goal—

as though they were one book in a thousand covers.

They cried, 'Long live Zayd and Khalid!'

but I reserved my cheers for evacuation alone!

O hero of evacuation, may a steady rain water your tomb,

watering gardens with a copious, streaming downpour!

Forty years have passed over you, yet you remain

clinging to the innermost fold of every heart.

Yours is a life whose chapters the young recite

like verses from Ya-Sin and Al-Ahqaf.

Chapters we chant, kindling in the blood

    what fires kindle in fibers.

Stand in the wilderness and say, 'Here lies the treasure

they buried amid boulders and deserts.'

Stand in the wilderness and say, 'Here lies one man who,

when men are measured, counts as thousands.'

He bore the trust alone, as though

he were amid an advancing legion made of himself.

    فالدرُّ درٌّ، وهْوَ في الأصْداف

    The humbleness of his grave did his bones no harm;

for pearls are pearls, even within their shells.

O master of martyrs, the seed you planted we still

water with our blood for harvest day.

And your national legacy is in the hands of a band

neither weak in resolve nor prone to falter.

A band of nobles—if the homeland is earnest

in searching for a band of nobles.

They returned to their roots and gathered together,

after discord, as close companions gather.

Each one giving his life or his wealth

for the Nile, content with a life of bare sufficiency.

They denied no right, nor, when disputing

falsehood, did they stoop to vulgarity.

Power has not bowed their heads, nor

has their spear-shaft yielded to the straightening clamp's pressure.

Misfortunes do not unsettle their composure,

and they meet death with scorn.

They said, 'A treaty of glory!' And you said,

'An incurable disease, not a healing remedy.'

Then, when morning dawned for the beholder,

they testified that you had hit the targets.

You grasped what lay hidden in events, as though

you read them from the soothsayer's page.

And you kept your pledge to your country in

an age when the trustworthy and faithful are rare.
