The mother slept beside the girl,

and behold, all were sunk in slumber.

Then both whispered what they kept hidden—

oh, the whispered secrets of daughters and mothers!

The mother said: "Little daughter, a curse

on you! Curse you, speckled snake!

But for you, I would not have reached middle age; instead,

I would have the figure of a nubile virgin.

You have a pillar you build through my collapse,

and a life you live through my demise.

If only I could bury you alive, so that

I might drink what you have sipped of my blood!"

The daughter said: "Little mother, a curse

on you, gray-haired woman with an ugly face!

How long do you want me to live as you used—

—to live in the days of old?

You are a heavy fetter on the arches of my feet,

and a veil between me and bliss.

If only I could bury you alive, O mother,

so that I might smell the fragrance of the breeze!"

The mother awoke after that and said:

"My daughter, my dove, embrace me."

Her girl embraced her, then said:

"You are my soul and my comfort. Kiss me!"
