Say to Taha: O star of letters,

Long has my vigil lasted, while you remain behind the clouds.

The horizon has held no tower like yours,

    Thorn-walled, its gates firmly secured.

Though the veil has hidden you from me, how often, in

The darkness of night, have you addressed me face to face!

I have long met you by the light

Of my lamp, and in the lines of my book.

Veil yourself as you wish, O

Star—except from the eyes of students.
