Let me escape the world of cares,

And wander in rapture through the realm of God's throne.

Forsake the deceptions of hopes, O soul; indeed, I

Want to seek a life of dignity.

Indeed, you fed me hopes for a long time,

So I returned, having reaped nothing but dry stalks.

    أقُدْكِ إلى الصِّرَاط المستقيم

    So give me your reins, and follow me;

I shall lead you to the straight path.

Ah, soul, if one day you became pure,

You would be more delicate than the passing of a breeze,

And fly on wing-feathers made of light,

And would not tread upon the earth's surface.

And you would almost soar beside the Pleiades,

And make a tower in the nebula your home.

And comprehend what cannot be contained

In the depths of books on the various sciences.

And truths would not be hidden from you, no matter

How hidden they were from perception and understanding.

And nothing would turn you away from your hereafter,

And you would seek nothing but your Lord's pleasure.

Ah, soul, woe to you! You are not my soul

If you try to harm my adversary!

So draw rancor from the recesses of my breast,

And be tender toward loved ones and foes.

And be made of water's bubbles, or of

The fragrance of flowers, or the radiance of stars.

If war ever breaks out over provisions,

Then leave the provisions aside, and fast.

Let me live by my spirit alone,

For bodies are destined to perish.

Love every living being; do not reserve

Your love for everyone with a handsome face.

When, O soul, will you cease showing pride

In the great 'lowering' you have attained [perhaps intended: good fortune]?

When will I find you paying no heed

To whatever grave calamity befalls you?

The universe around you is grim,

And yet you smile, revealing a string of pearls?

By your Lord, how many cups of wine have you drunk—

Mixed with water—and others of hellfire?

So were sorrow and joy anything but

Like the phantoms of clouds and cloudbanks?

And every pleasure perishes, while there remains

Eternal delight in the abode of bliss.

When calamities grow dark, seek illumination

From God's light in the pitch-black night.

And persist, if you would have God as your treasure,

In piety, and never depart from it.

And do not listen to the whispers of wishes,

Or else you will live in lasting worry.

And let Paradise's sweet flowing water suffice as your wine,

And a company of houris as your boon companions!

And how can houris compare with a wicked drinking companion,

And eternity's wine with the milking of vines?

To God I turned with all my heart,

And I ask Him for 'habit' for everyone [perhaps intended: happiness].

I asked God to grant the wealthy more

Of His blessings, and ease to the destitute.

I asked God to wipe disease away completely,

So no eyes would fall upon a sick person.

I asked God for freedom for the captive,

And a father's and mother's tenderness for the orphan.

I asked God for peace throughout the world,

In which the lion lives alongside the male ostrich.

And were it not that I know my own place,

I would ask God concerning the people of Hell,

And say to Him: 'Do You burn people in fire,

Though You have named Yourself the Merciful?'
