    وإلا فحسبُ الناس ما يفعلُ الرعبُ

    It is death if war rises to its feet;

and if not, what terror does is enough for mankind.

Its specter appears to them waking and asleep,

and calamity's coming is less grievous than awaiting it.

We are terrified: no eyelid closes for fear,

nor does any side rest in its sleeping place.

No nose is without a mask clinging to it,

no house without a pit dug within it.

Never have hands been seared or entrails burned

by embers like these, neither kindled nor dying out.

So, O lion baring your teeth at humankind,

have mercy: either withdraw or leap!

Ambitions whose mirage's gleam deceived the Arabs—

now East and West burn in their fire.

I seem to see war rise, its blaze flaring,

with pens already dry and books folded shut.

and a squadron high in the sky is bombarded by a squadron.

And between them deaths move as though they were

birds, and human souls were their grain.

A battle where no full-length coats of armor can ward off

its harm, nor does the keen-edged sword avail.

    The sword's edge is blunted, and the spear-shafts snapped;

there is no more thrusting there, nor striking.

I seem to see it, its cannons firing, and no

shot of theirs misses, no blow glances off.

They destroy whatever they strike; were they

aimed at the Alps, the Alps would be leveled by them.

It is lightning, snatching sight; it is thunder, crashing.

It is meteors, when meteors plunge from the firmament.

So whoever once hunted doves with his arrows—

we have arrows with which the Pole Star is hunted.

I seem to see it, the aircraft with their gas

pouring it forth with every torrent the clouds pour down.

It stealthily stretches its two hands toward souls,

yet no head is severed, no blood pours out.

Delicate at the edges, you scarcely sense it,

yet rock and hard metal are softer than it.

It has droplets that quench no thirst,

and nothing dry or wet survives where they settle.

When they spread across the horizon, they respect no sanctity

of woman or old man whose head is crowned with gray.

When they spread across the horizon, they strike down a budding maiden

and choke a mother, a child crawling behind her.

The air has indeed been mixed with poison; will, I wonder,

the rivers' sweet flowing water be tainted too?

I see the West draw near the flames like moths.

Do these people have some purpose in burning themselves?

And oh, that war of twenty years ago—

its wound has left a scar in every heart.

It harmed both sides, though victory was won

by one side, while the other suffered the humiliation of defeat.

    إذْ الناسُ كالأنعام قوتهم العشب

    people were like cattle, their food was grass;

and along the trench edges they had no

beds but earth—if only earth could help.

They endure heat that even a lizard lacks

the strength to bear, and cold no bear can endure.

while fire found fertile pasture in their bodies.

And oh, peoples who stumble whenever they rise!

and the caravan has not rested a moment from its travels.

on war, abundance would spread and barrenness would end.

nor any naked person without a garment to cover him.

a dog lives peacefully in their shade.

If the lion hunts the gazelle out of hunger,

what excuse is there when one people hunts another?

The sins of the weak and helpless are many,

while the strong, when called to account, have no sin.

As though no laws existed among the peoples of the world,

    nor resurrection beyond them, nor a Lord above them;

nor mercy in the laws of humankind,

nor anything in the world that is called love.

No object of worship remains but sustenance alone,

so every heart is infatuated with it, love-stricken.

Our consolation is that civilization has gone bankrupt:

its splendor is counterfeit, its speech a lie.

Whenever I picture civilization, I imagine it

a lioness with a belly, but without a heart.

oh, if only I knew what the unseen future conceals!

the forms have differed, and the essence has stayed the same.

Their wars are fault enough for the sons of Eve,

if they had no fault other than war.
