I sat upon a carpet of sand,
I sat upon a carpet made of sand
Amid the grass and limpid water.
Amidst the grass and gurgling stream

And the breeze had grown gentle, and was sweeter
The breeze blew gently, making it
To the lover's heart than union.
More pleasurable to a lover's heart than union

The grove's birds sing out to my right,
The birds of Aiyla sing on my right
And the river's water whispers to my left.
The murmuring river on my left

And night's army, from among the sons of Ham,
The army of night, Ham's offspring
Raids the fields and hills.
Raids the farms and hills

And I had turned my face toward the star,
I turned my face toward the star
And nights spent awake had brought us together.
And our nightly vigil brought us close

إلىto دنياa world سوىother than دنياthe world of الزوالtransience
So I felt as though I were soaring in spirit,
I felt as though my soul ascended
To a world other than the world of transience.
To a world other than the vanishing one

Here the world unfolds before me,
And my imagination swims in its depths
And my imagination swims through its unknown realms.

So you think me alone, while around me
Daughters of thought indulge my whims
The daughters of thought are extravagant in their coquetry.
The stillness of night sensitizes my perception

The stillness of night sharpens a living being's edge,
So I hear the soft footfalls of the sand grouse
So I hear the footfalls of ants.

And its silence fills my soul with reverent awe,
Clarifying the beads of dewdrops
So it becomes as pure as beads of pearl.
The sun hides the essence of the universe

And the sun hides the universe's essence from me,
And I glimpse it in the crescent moon's glow
And I glimpse it by the crescent moon's light.

If indeed a treasure lies beneath the earth's belly,
Then how much more lies atop the mountains!
