I clothed people in the silk of my praise,

yet spent the night darning my worn-out cloak.

    Alas for the verses

    I build—but in the air!

Do I compose a thousand verses every day,

only to live in rented lodgings after all that?

For if a house of verse were a pleasant dwelling,

then I would live in the loftiest building.

Then I would fill the Nile's bank with houses,

so you would see not a handspan of open space there.

And I would shelter widows and orphans,

and leave no homeless wanderer out in the open.

Nor would I have the tenants' property seized,

even if all were unable to pay.

Then I would own neighborhoods in Egypt,

whose houses butt against the heights of the sky.

I would roam among them, house after house,

so my summer would be here, and my winter over here.

But no dwelling in a house of verse

is pleasant, even if Abu al-Ala built it.

Ah, who will buy my verses

in exchange for a hut built of clay and water?

For clay is no nobler than my heart,

and water is no dearer than my blood.
