    God be with you: you neither complain nor grumble;

Your heart overflows, yet your jaw is bridled.

And oil spills from the measure when the measure is brimful.

Glass vessels shattering at the east wind's touch.

We blamed fate, though it was innocent,

And said: 'It is fate that gives and withholds.'

By your life, I do not know by what logic

I see fortunes being apportioned in Cairo.

How many a man born blind in Cairo has observed the heavens,

And a mute has shaken the timbers of the pulpits!

I dwelt in Cairo, ill-fated and motionless,

As still as its pyramids and al-Muqattam.

I stood in my place, never stirring, while the arch of my foot

Swells upon the thorns from long journeys through the night.

As though I were a wheel revolving around itself,

Its course grows longer, yet it makes no headway.

Others may have kin and marriage ties, but I

Am alone in Cairo: no kinsman and no in-law.

But the people feigned blindness toward me—or went blind.

Must my youth wither within a village's walls,

In Bab, where silence seems encamped?

Am a stranger to them in feeling and in spirit.

They say: 'Its pastures are green and fresh.'

I said: 'Grant it so; I am no sheep put out to graze.'

Easy now: I live in a wilderness,

Where even the living may be prayed over as the dead.

    I am weary there of life's single shade;

My home there stays my home; my companions stay the same, the same.

A life like the water's surface, with the water stagnant:

I am neither happy nor in pain.

I seek only a life of depth,

    That delights me, so I am content, or distresses me, so I am indignant;

A life like the sea's deep waters, with the sea surging,

Where storms roar and thunder crashes.

A life with earnestness and play, with contentment

And discontent; it has two flavors: honey and bitter colocynth.

Who, then, will tell the 'Daughter of al-Mu'izz' that I have

A heart that circles over her like birds,

And that for seven years past I have remained faithful

To my pledge, even if a lovesick man betrays his vows?

If I am far from Cairo, it is enough for me that I

Make pilgrimage to her each year and enter the pilgrim's sacred state.

By your life, I have been saddled with boys,

To whom I go each day, evening and morning.

Little ones—we educate them with minds like theirs,

And build them up, while we ourselves crumble.

I almost become a child again, so long have I

Played the child's part before them.

Chapters we have begun and shall repeat,

Over and over: a repeated tune grows wearisome.

Whoever has a heart that pities one in torment,

The teacher is the person most deserving of pity!

As a youth, I paid no heed to the result,

Now I dream of it in the stillness of the night.

Walking with a tablet and stylus in my right hand.

Lose one right while another is denied.

And visits people's houses while they sleep.

They constrict my spacious breast, yet I conceal them.

Would that I had closed my eyelid over the grit,

And taught my soul some of what it does not know!

Had my soul obeyed me, I would have lent it

On terms of abasement; I would not lose while another profits.

Let whoever wishes be master; it is enough for me that I

Guarded my dignity when they showed generosity,

And did not sing love verses of the generous and their bounty,

While another is enamored of them, not of full-breasted maidens.

I am truly cheated if I become Caesar,

And a benefactor collars my neck with bounty.
