Exalted is He who adorned you with eloquence, my friend.

May God, Lord of Majesty, preserve it—and preserve you!

How can spring complain of winter's cold?

And has its nose not smelled your sweet basil?

Forgive sickness if it afflicts you; for sickness has no

sense with which to savor your eloquence.

Had those nights known who you are,

they would not have struck your body with illness,

and would have kept you healthy for the rhymes

you build, raising them with your eloquence.

We have not forgotten you, my friend, but

we have not counted ourselves your peers.

If I have not sent you my verse,

it is because my pebbles fear your pearls.

Do not blame me, for my poetry's demon

hides when it sees your demon.

It is not my fault if poetry spends the night lifting you

and raising your standing among the stars.

    فَلِيَ العُذْر إن جهلتُ مكانك

    You journey by night among the stars, my friend;

so I have an excuse if I do not know where you are.

Friend, here is my collection of verse, despite what

it contains; so grant its shortcomings your forgiveness.
