وعفواand pardon أرجِّيهI hope for it ليومfor the day of حسابياmy reckoning
The sum of my words: I ask God for nearness,
and for pardon I hope for on my day of reckoning.
عَرَفْتI have known حياتيmy life: بؤسَهاits misery ونَعِيمَهاand its bliss
فياليتso, would that شِعْريmy knowledge: بعدهاafter it ماwhat ورائياlies beyond me؟
I have known my life, its misery and its bliss;
would that I knew what lies beyond it for me!
وياand O ليتwould that شعريmy knowledge يومthe day تدنوdraws near مَنِيَّتيmy death:
ويا ليت شعري يوم تدنو مَنِيَّتي:
أيُحْسِنُwill it treat well? قبريmy grave، أمor يُسِئُtreat badly لقائياmy reception؟
Would that I knew, when my death draws near:
will my grave receive me well or ill?
خليليَّmy two friends، إنيI لاnot أَبَرِّئُdeclare innocent ساحتيmyself
أَأَزعمdo I claim? أنِّيthat I ماnot اقْتَرَفْتcommitted معاصياsins؟
My two friends, I do not declare myself innocent;
can I claim that I have committed no sins?
فلاso do not تدفناbury, you two ذنبيmy sin بقبريَin my grave، وادفناand bury, you two
صلاتيmy prayer مَعِيwith me جَوْفِهinside it، وصيامياand my fasting
Do not bury my sins in my grave; instead bury
my prayers with me inside it, and my fasting.
فإنbut if تدفناyou two bury ذنبيmy sin معيwith me، فلرُّبماthen perhaps
عفاpardoned اللهGod عمّنwhoever كانwas للعَفْوfor pardon راجياhoping
But if you bury my sins with me, perhaps
God will pardon one who hoped for pardon.
ويأسُكand your despair منof عفوthe pardon of السماءِheaven خطيئةٌa sin
أشدgraver منthan الذنبthe sin الذيwhich كنتَyou were جانِياcommitting
Your despair of heaven's pardon is a sin
graver than the sin you have committed.
أَأَيئَسُshould I despair? منof عفوthe pardon of السماءِheaven، وربَّماand perhaps
وجدتI have found علىon الأرضearth ابنa son of حَوَّاءَEve عَافياforgiving
Should I despair of heaven's pardon, when perhaps
I have found a forgiving son of Eve on earth?
لعلَّperhaps إلهthe God of العرشthe Throne يَقْبَلُaccepts توبتيmy repentance
ويسمعand hears فيin البيتthe House الحرامSacred دعائياmy supplication!
Perhaps the Lord of the Throne will accept my repentance
and hear my supplication in the Sacred House!
أهَبْتI called بهupon Him إذwhen لُذْتُI sought refuge بالرُّكنat the Corner قائلاًsaying:
أهَبْت به إذ لُذْتُ بالرُّكن قائلاً:
حَنَانَيْكYour mercy! مَدْعُوًّاwhen invoked، ولَبَيَّكand at Your service! داعياwhen calling!
I called upon Him when I sought refuge at the Corner, saying:
Your mercy when I call You; at Your service when You call me!
وأسْبَلتُand I let fall عندbeside السترthe curtain غَرْبَthe torrent of مَدَامِعيmy tears
وماand not كانwas دمعيmy weeping فيin الحوادثmisfortunes جارياflowing!
I let the torrent of my tears fall beside the curtain,
though my tears had not flowed in misfortune!
وماand not كُنْتُI would have been لولاbut for صَالِحٌSalih مُتَمَتِّعًاperforming tamattu‘ pilgrimage
ولاnor طائِفًاcircumambulating بالبيتthe House سَبْعًاseven times، وساعياand performing sa‘y
But for Salih, I would not have made the tamattu‘ pilgrimage,
nor circled the House seven times, nor performed the ritual walk.
جَزىmay reward اللهGod عنيon my behalf صالحاSalih، وكفىand sufficient is بهHe
مُثِيبًاa rewarder علىfor حُسْنthe goodness of الصَّنيعthe deed، مُجَازياa recompenser!
May God reward Salih on my behalf; He suffices
as the giver of reward and recompense for good deeds!
