And someone asked: How do you fare amid trials?

So I said: We have long been close companions.

You were created for me, and I was created for her,

Before either you or I existed.

If a smile appears upon my lip,

It complains to God of exile in its homeland.

Band together, O calamities, and rage!

My stem, as you reckon it, has not softened.

There is no longer any grave event on earth

That comes between my eyelids and sleep.

    فإن أطالَ الجفاءَ، أوحشني

    Through long familiarity with sorrow, I have grown fond of it;

And if it stays aloof too long, it leaves me lonely.

I scarcely count as part of my life

A day of mine that is free from grief.

Though the heat of worries may melt others,

The heat of worries polishes me.

How often my soul has filled with certainty when

My worries increase and my sorrow overflows within me!

And worry polishes souls if they have rusted,

And in worry lies exercise for the body.

By God, no affliction comes without recompense,

No indeed, nor any blessing without a price.

How many a favor has brought harm—and how much harm

Conceals within its folds a blessing among blessings!

    إن أنا لم أَضطلع بها، فمَن؟

    So let Time persist in its schemes;

If I do not shoulder them, then who will?

    فإنما يشتكي أخو الوهن

    Let people never see me complaining;

For only a brother of weakness complains.

I have prepared for calamities, should they descend,

The patience of a noble man, fit to bear them.

Calamities do not rob him of his discernment,

Even if they confound a discerning man's wits.

    He walks unhurriedly amid thunderclaps,

As though he were walking without ears.

The dignity of kings adorns him, despite

    Dry rations and coarse clothing.

His old garment complains of wear, but no

    Speck of grime stains it.

How little life and treasure matter, so long as

    Honor remains unviolated!
