أَبقَيتَyou left behind مالَكَyour wealth ميراثاًas an inheritance لِوارِثِهfor its heir
أَبقَيتَ مالَكَ ميراثاً لِوارِثِه
ياO لَيتَwould that شِعرِيَmy knowledge ماwhat أَبقىhas left لَكَfor you المالُthe wealth
يا لَيتَ شِعرِيَ ما أَبقى لَكَ المالُ
You left your wealth as an inheritance for its heir.
Would that I knew what wealth has left for you!
القَومُthe people بَعدَكَafter you فيin حالٍa state تَسُرُّهُمُthat delights them
القَومُ بَعدَكَ في حالٍ تَسُرُّهُمُ
فَكَيفَhow, then بَعدَهُمُafter them دارَتturned بِكَfor you الحالُthe state of affairs
فَكَيفَ بَعدَهُمُ دارَت بِكَ الحالُ
After you, the people are in a state that delights them.
How, then, has your lot turned since you left them?
مَلّواthey grew tired of البُكاءَweeping فَماso not يُبكيكَmourns you مِنof أَحَدٍanyone
مَلّوا البُكاءَ فَما يُبكيكَ مِن أَحَدٍ
وَاِستَحكَمَand took hold القيلُthe talk فيconcerning الميراثِthe inheritance وَالقالُand the gossip
وَاِستَحكَمَ القيلُ في الميراثِ وَالقالُ
They have tired of weeping, so no one mourns you.
And talk and gossip over the inheritance have taken hold.
مالَتturned aside بِهِمwith them عَنكَaway from you دُنياworldly life أَقبَلَتturned toward لَهُمthem
مالَت بِهِم عَنكَ دُنيا أَقبَلَت لَهُم
وَأَدبَرَتand turned away عَنكَfrom you وَالأَيّامُand the days أَحوالُchanging fortunes
وَأَدبَرَت عَنكَ وَالأَيّامُ أَحوالُ
Worldly life has drawn them away from you, turning toward them,
And turned its back on you; days bring changing fortunes.
