إِنّيindeed I إِذاwhen مَلَكتُI possess قوتَsustenance غَدٍtomorrow
فَلَيسَthen there is no بيin me فاقَةٌneed إِلىfor أَحَدِanyone
Indeed, when I possess tomorrow's sustenance,
When I have enough for tomorrow’s bread
Then I have no need of anyone.
I have no need of any man
إِنَّindeed غِنىwealth النَفسِthe soul رَأسُthe foremost of كُلِّall غِنىًwealth
وَماand not اِفتِقاريmy need إِلّاexcept إِلىfor الصَمدِthe Eternal Refuge
Indeed, wealth of soul is the greatest wealth of all,
True wealth lies in self-contentment
And my need is only for the Eternal Refuge.
My only want is my Creator
وَالناسُand people صِنفانِtwo kinds فيin زَمانِكَyour age ذاthis
لَوif غَيرَother than هَذينَthese two رُمتَyou sought لَمnot تَجِدِyou would find
And people in this age of yours are of two kinds:
People now fall in only two camps
Were you to seek any besides these two, you would find none.
Find any besides these two you will not
هَذاthis one بَخيلa miser وَعِندهُand he has سَعَةٌample means
وَذاand that one جَوادgenerous بِغَيرِwithout ذاتِpossessions of يَدِa hand
This one is a miser, though he has ample means,
One's a miser yet enjoys great wealth
And that one is generous, yet has no means.
The other gives freely though he has naught
