تَراضَيناwe have mutually agreed بِحُكمِwith the decree of اللَهِGod فيناconcerning us
تَراضَينا بِحُكمِ اللَهِ فينا
لَناwe have أَدَبٌlearning and refinement وَلِلثَقَفِيِّand al-Thaqafi has مالُwealth
لَنا أَدَبٌ وَلِلثَقَفِيِّ مالُ
We have accepted God's decree concerning us:
We have acquiesced to God's judgment of us
We have learning and refinement, and al-Thaqafi has wealth.
We have morals while the uncultured has wealth
وَماand ... is not الثَقَفِيُّal-Thaqafi إِنeven if جادَتare fine كُساهُhis garments
وَما الثَقَفِيُّ إِن جادَت كُساهُ
وَراعَكَand awes you شَخصُهُhis figure إِلّاbut خَيالُa phantom
وَراعَكَ شَخصُهُ إِلّا خَيالُ
And al-Thaqafi—even if his garments are fine
The uncultured, though his robe be generous
and his figure awes you—is nothing but a phantom.
And his person striking, remains but an apparition
