القَولُ ما صَدَّقَهُ الفِعلُ

القَولُ ما صَدَّقَهُ الفِعلُ

وَالفِعلُ ما وَكَّدَهُ العَقلُ

وَالفِعلُ ما وَكَّدَهُ العَقلُ

Speech is what action confirms;

Words not confirmed by deeds,

And action is what reason affirms.

Deeds not supported by reason.

لا يَثبُتُ الفَرعُ إِذا لَم يَكُن

لا يَثبُتُ الفَرعُ إِذا لَم يَكُن

يُقِلُّهُ مِن تَحتِهِ الأَصلُ

يُقِلُّهُ مِن تَحتِهِ الأَصلُ

A branch cannot stand firm unless

A branch cannot stand without

The root bears it up from beneath.

Its roots to sustain it.

قَد يَنفَعُ العَذلُ الفَتى تارَة

قَد يَنفَعُ العَذلُ الفَتى تارَة

وَرُبَّما أَغرى الفَتى العَذلُ

وَرُبَّما أَغرى الفَتى العَذلُ

Reproach may sometimes benefit a young man,

At times, shunning brings a youth gain,

And sometimes reproach goads the young man on.

At other times, it leads him astray.

كُلُّ اِمرِئٍ في وَجهِهِ شاهِد

كُلُّ اِمرِئٍ في وَجهِهِ شاهِد

مِنهُ بِما يُضمِرُهُ عَدلُ

مِنهُ بِما يُضمِرُهُ عَدلُ

In every person's face is a witness,

Each person's face reveals

From himself, truthful about what he conceals.

What fairness or foulness lies within.

كَم مُظهِرٍ ديناً وَمِن دينِهِ

كَم مُظهِرٍ ديناً وَمِن دينِهِ

الغِشُّ لِأَهلِ الدينِ وَالخَتلُ

الغِشُّ لِأَهلِ الدينِ وَالخَتلُ

How many profess religion, while part of their religion

Many who feign devotion

Is cheating the faithful and deceit!

Deceive devoted people.

لا خَيرَ في المالِ إِذا لَم يَكُن

لا خَيرَ في المالِ إِذا لَم يَكُن

فيهِ لِمَن لاذَ بِهِ فَضلُ

فيهِ لِمَن لاذَ بِهِ فَضلُ

There is no good in wealth unless

Wealth is useless if it does not

It holds bounty for whoever seeks refuge in it.

Benefit those who seek its shelter.

لَيسَ لِرَبِّ البَيتِ مِن بَيتِهِ

لَيسَ لِرَبِّ البَيتِ مِن بَيتِهِ

عَيشٌ إِذا لَم يَصلُحِ الأَهلُ

عَيشٌ إِذا لَم يَصلُحِ الأَهلُ

The master of the house gains from his home no

The owner gets no joy from his house

Life of ease if the household is not upright.

If his family does not prosper in it.
