O onlooker, gazing with the eyes of one asleep,

and witness to the matter, yet as one who does not see—

Your soul has deluded you, and you have granted it

the paths of hope—though none of them leads to its goal.

You heap sin upon sin, yet still you hope

through them to attain the Gardens and the worshiper’s triumph.

And you have forgotten that God cast Adam out

from there into this world for a single sin.
