Leave hypocrisy to him whom hypocrisy has gripped

in urging generosity, and remember the humiliation of poverty.

And die for the engraved dirham, as a young man dies

who deemed death for its sake the noblest generosity.

And turn aside from this and that, and from their saying:

“Renown endures, while the pleasure of blessings fades.”

Were it not for your wealth, you would be a dog in their eyes.

So if you refuse, then try it—and be wretched with regret.
