إِذاif كانَis شُكريmy gratitude نِعمَةَthe blessing of اللَهِGod نِعمَةًa blessing
عَلَيَّupon me لَهُto Him فيfor مِثلِهاits like يَجِبُis owed الشُكرُgratitude
If my gratitude for God's blessing is itself a blessing
Upon me, for which gratitude is likewise owed to Him,
فَكَيفَhow, then بلوغُattaining الشُكرِgratitude إِلّاexcept بِفَضلِهِthrough His grace
وَإِنand even if طالَتِgrow long الأَيّامُthe days وَاِتَّصَلَand stretches on العُمرُlife
How, then, can gratitude be attained except through His grace,
Even if the days grow long and life stretches on?
إِذاif مُسَّis touched بِالسَرّاءِby prosperity عَمَّpervades سُرورُهاits joy
وَإِنand if مُسَّis touched بِالضَرّاءِby adversity أَعقَبَهاfollows it الأَجرُreward
If one is touched by prosperity, its joy spreads everywhere;
And if one is touched by adversity, reward follows it.
وَماand neither مِنهُماof the two إِلاexcept لَهُbelonging to Him فيهِin it نِعمَةٌa blessing
تَضيقُare too narrow بِهاfor it الأَوهامُimaginations وَالبرُّand the land وَالبَحرُand the sea
And in each of the two is a blessing of His,
Too vast for imagination, land, and sea to contain.
