رَجَعتُI responded عَلىto السَفيهِthe fool بِفَضلِwith the virtue of حِلمٍforbearance
فَكانَso became الحِلمُforbearance عَنهُtoward him لَهُfor him لِجاماa bridle
I countered the fool with the virtue of forbearance,
so my forbearance toward him became a bridle for him.
وَظَنَّand he expected بيfrom me السَفاهَfolly فَلَمbut did not يَجِدنيfind me
أُسافِهُهُI match his folly وَقُلتُand I said لَهُto him سَلاماpeace
He expected folly from me, but did not find me
matching his folly; and I said to him, “Peace.”
فَقامَso he rose يَجُرُّdragging رِجلَيهِhis feet ذَليلاًhumiliated
وَقَدand already كَسَبَhe had earned المَذَمَّةَcensure وَالمَلاماand blame
So he rose, dragging his feet, humiliated,
and he had earned censure and blame.
وَفَضلُand the virtue of الحِلمِforbearance أَبلَغُmore effective فيagainst سَفيهa fool
وَأَحرىand more likely أَنto يَنالَobtain بِهِthrough it اِنتِقاماrevenge
And the virtue of forbearance has greater effect on a fool,
and is a surer means of obtaining revenge.
