كَتَمتI concealed الهَوىlove حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen نَطَقتspoke بِهِof it
كَتَمت الهَوى حَتّى إِذا نَطَقت بِهِ
بَوادِرُfirst rushes منof دَمعtears تَسيلُflow عَلىon خَدّيmy cheek
بَوادِرُ من دَمع تَسيلُ عَلى خَدّي
I concealed my love until—when they spoke of it,
I concealed my love until it was voiced
the first signs of my tears, streaming down my cheek—
By the first rushes of tears flowing down my cheek;
وَشاعَand became known الَّذيwhat أَضمَرتُI kept hidden مِنfrom غَيرِabsence of مَنطِقٍspeech
وَشاعَ الَّذي أَضمَرتُ مِن غَيرِ مَنطِقٍ
كَأَنَّas though ضَميرَsecret القَلبِthe heart يَرشَحُseeps مِنfrom جِلديmy skin
كَأَنَّ ضَميرَ القَلبِ يَرشَحُ مِن جِلدي
what I had hidden spread abroad, without speech,
And what I had hidden became known without a word,
as though it were the heart’s secret, seeping through my skin.
As though the heart’s secret were seeping from my skin.
