وَماand not شِيَميmy ways مُوافَقَةُagreeing with الثِقاتِthe trustworthy
And a trusted man changed when he grew rich;
And one I trusted changed when fortune smiled
It is not my way to agree with the trustworthy.

فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him عَتبتَyou reproached عَلَيَّagainst me ظُلماًunjustly
فَراراًin flight مِنfrom مَؤوناتِthe burdens of العُداةِthe enemies
So I told him: You reproached me unjustly,

To escape the burdens of enemies.
Fleeing from the hostility of enemies
فَعُدso return لِمَوَدَّتيto my friendship وَعَلَيَّand upon me نَذرٌa vow
سُؤالُكَasking you حاجَةًa favor حَتّىuntil المَماتِdeath
Return, then, to my friendship; I am bound by a vow
Return to love me; I vow
[Never] to ask you for a favor until death.
To grant whatever you request until death
