وَلَم أَرَ مِثلَ الفَقرِ أَوضَعَ لِلفَتى

وَلَم أَرَ مِثلَ الفَقرِ أَوضَعَ لِلفَتى

وَلَم أَرَ مِثلَ المالِ أَرفَعَ لِلنَذلِ

وَلَم أَرَ مِثلَ المالِ أَرفَعَ لِلنَذلِ

And I have seen nothing lower a young man more than poverty.

I have not seen poverty debase a man like fortune uplift a fool,

And I have seen nothing raise a base man higher than wealth.

Nor family to help a man like kindred when troubles pull,

وَلَم أَرَ عِزّاً لِاِمرِئٍ كَعَشيرَةٍ

وَلَم أَرَ عِزّاً لِاِمرِئٍ كَعَشيرَةٍ

وَلَم أَرَ ذُلّاً مِثلَ نَأيٍ عَنِ الأَهلِ

وَلَم أَرَ ذُلّاً مِثلَ نَأيٍ عَنِ الأَهلِ

And I have seen no source of honor for a man like a clan.

Absence from kith and kin nought else can hold so base a place,

And I have seen no humiliation like being far from family.

And, but for lack of wit, no uglier thing than lack of grace.

وَلَم أَرَ مِن عُدمٍ أَضَرَّ عَلى الفَتى

وَلَم أَرَ مِن عُدمٍ أَضَرَّ عَلى الفَتى

إِذا عاشَ بَينَ الناسِ من عدم العَقلِ

إِذا عاشَ بَينَ الناسِ من عدم العَقلِ

And I have seen no deprivation more harmful to a young man,

When he lives among people, than a lack of reason.
