تَحَرَّseek carefully مِنَamong الطُرقِthe paths أَوساطَهاtheir middle courses
وَعَدِّand turn away عَنِfrom الجانِبِthe side المُشتَبِهdoubtful
Among the paths, seek the middle ways,
Seek the middle path through life's journeys,
and turn away from the doubtful side.
And turn away from doubt's tempting side,
وَسَمعَكَand your hearing صُنguard عَنfrom سَماعِhearing القَبيحِvile speech
كَصَونِlike guarding اللِسانِthe tongue عَنِfrom النُطقِutterance بِهof it
And guard your hearing from hearing vile speech,
Close off your hearing to ugly words,
as you guard your tongue from uttering it.
As you guard your tongue from speaking them.
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you عِندَat the time of اِستِماعِlistening to القَبيحِvile speech
شَريكٌa partner لِقائِلِهِto its speaker فَاِنتَبِهso take heed
For when you listen to vile speech,
For when you hear what should not be said,
you are its speaker’s partner—so take heed.
You share the blame with who uttered it.
فَكَمfor how many أَزعَجَdrove onward الحِرصُgreed مِنof طالِبٍa seeker
فَوافىand he met المَنِيَّةَdeath فيin مَطلَبِهhis pursuit
For many a seeker, driven on by greed,
How greed has led many seekers astray,
has met death in his pursuit.
To find only death at their journey's end.
