Khumm has faded and lies empty of those I once knew there.

And at al-Masha in Sarif, a campsite's trace has stirred your longing.

It has faded and lies empty since its people departed,

And winds and dark, downpouring clouds have moaned over it.

It still shows, though decay has effaced its dwellings,

As a tattoo shows upon a lovely wrist.

The camp-traces of a worthy people, flung away

By far-off separation, when they turned their camels and haltered them.

Before your very eyes they departed, their howdahs seeming

Like ships, or tall palms with drooping branches.

    وَأَحسَنُ مَن يَمشي عَلى قَدَمٍ نُعمُ

    Among that people was Nu'm, the eye's delight and my love;

And Nu'm is the loveliest of all who walk on foot.

Nu'm was a lasting affliction to this heart,

A derangement and a sickness no sickness could equal.

Pampered, she never hurried to milk a flock,

Nor did lambs bleat to one another around her bed-curtain.

She captivated me with the eyes of a young wild ox in a thicket,

    And a neck like a white gazelle's, adorned with a necklace;

And thick hair, folded into braids, as though

A grapevine lay upon her when she let her tresses down.

    وَأَشنَبَ رِفّاقِ الثَنايا لَهُ ظَلمُ

    And an aquiline nose like a sword's edge, which drinks before she does;

And a fresh, white-toothed mouth, with delicate incisors and pearly luster.

She has swelling hips and a full, well-grown leg,

And an ankle so covered with flesh that its bone does not jut out.

She ensnares men's minds with her charm,

And her coquetry and melodious voice slay them.

Full-bodied and ample-hipped, with no jutting bones,

She grew amid luxury, and her body filled out.

She descends from fair, freeborn women, lovely as statues,

Soft and pampered—not short fair women, nor broad-nosed.

And upright forefathers whose deeds bear no reproach:

They are the high-born elite, the proud, noble lords.

They feed whoever comes to them in hardship,

When want is lamented in a year of drought.

    هُمُ النَضدُ السِرُّ الغَطارِفَةُ الشُمُّ

    Dauntless heroes, when war girds itself for battle;

They are the high-born elite, the proud, noble lords.

When she traces her lineage, she stretches her hands toward high honor,

And Islam and her great ancestral honor affirm her claim.

When I do not meet Nu'm, I seem to dwell beside

Tribes of Yajuj, with the rampart between us.

And a kinsman whose rancor's claws I clipped

Through my forbearance toward him, though he has none.

He seeks my humiliation, and seeks nothing else,

Yet for humiliation to touch him is like death to me.

If I pardon him, I close an eye over grit,

And he does not even recognize the pardon of his offense.

If I avenge myself on him, I am like one who feathers

An enemy's arrows, by which bones are broken again.

I hastened to draw away from him; a man controls

His arrow while that arrow remains in his hand.

I endured whatever came between him and me,

For war between kin and peace are not alike.

He strives to revile my honor in my absence,

Yet from me he receives neither contempt nor abuse.

When I ask him to uphold our kinship, he asks of me

Its severance—that is folly and sin.

If I call him to fairness, he refuses and defies me,

And calls for an unjust ruling, taking judgment as his refuge.

I have scorched my spiteful foes and found relief,

And made a cut that cauterization cannot heal.

I have repaid wrong with an equal wrong,

And sometimes shown forbearance, even when the offense was great.

But for fear of God, and the kinship whose

Observance is a duty and whose neglect is injustice,

Then my flashing blade would have struck him, and I would have branded his nose

With a mark of disgrace that no other mark could match.

When I build, he strives to tear down my good work,

But a builder is not like one whose business is destruction.

He wishes I were destitute, in dire need,

Yet I hate, with all my strength, for poverty to touch him.

He counts my calamity amid life's mishaps as a gain,

Though it brings him neither honor nor gain.

If fate strikes him down, I am his champion,

I fight his foe for him if the foe bites him.

And I fight off for him every arrogant, overbearing man,

Stubborn and fiercely contentious, when brute oppression confronts him.

And, beyond his affection, he shares his wealth with him,

In prosperity and poverty—a share worthy of the name—

From the hand of a giver who earns praise and bounty,

And knows that miserliness is followed by reproach.

A noble man who answers one seeking aid when he calls,

And when he rises, he rises to win high honor.

A young man whose resolve no worry shatters through the night

In the face of terror, while worry holds the timid man back.

When he resolves, he carries out his purpose without weariness,

And determination in his affairs drives harm away from him.

Trustworthy, strong in his powers, and resourceful,

A companion of prudence whenever prudence is sought.

It becomes his shield when calamities come,

And a stronghold of might where mountain goats find refuge.

I have never ceased in my gentleness to him and my tenderness

Toward him, as a mother bends lovingly over her child.

And in lowering my wing to him, seeking affection,

So kinship and blood-ties might bring him close to me.

And in saying, when I fear some calamity for him,

"Stay safe!" For he is maternal uncle, binding tie, and paternal uncle.

And in bearing things from him that trouble me,

And restraining my anger—for restraint can help—

To draw the rancor out of him, until I drew it out.

He had borne a hatred too great for his body to contain.

I healed the malice in his breast through magnanimity,

With my forbearance, as a wound is healed with medicines.

I treated him until his aversion subsided,

And we returned as though no estrangement had ever come between us.

I quenched the fire of war between him and me,

And after that war, he became at peace with us.
