قِفاhalt, you two ياO خَليلَيَّmy two friends المَطِيَّthe riding camels المُقَرَّداcleansed of ticks
عَلىat الطَلَلِthe ruins الباليtimeworn الَّذيwhich قَدalready تَأَبَّداhave become desolate
Halt the tick-cleansed riding camels, my two friends,
at the timeworn ruins that have long stood desolate.
قِفاhalt, you two نَبكِlet us weep فيamong أَطلالِthe ruins of دارٍa dwelling تَنَكَّرَتgrew strange

Halt; let us weep among the ruins of a dwelling grown strange
to us after familiarity; you will be rewarded and praised.
قِفاhalt, you two إِنَّهاindeed it أَمسَتhas become قِفاراًa wasteland وَمَنand those who بِهاwere in it

وَإِنand even though كانَwas مِنamong ذيone possessing وُدِّناour affection قَدalready تَمَعدَداhas gone far away
Halt; it has become a wasteland, and those who dwelt there,
though once dear to us, have gone far away.

None of my tribe or my beloved's tribe remained
there who rivaled the sun in might and lordship.
فَلِيso I had أَشهُرٌmonths حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen اِنشَقَّتِsplit العَصاthe staff

Months passed for me, until the staff of unity split,
and their affairs flew into fragments and scattered.
فَسارواthen they departed فَأَمّاand as for جُلُّmost of حَيّىmy tribe فَفَرَّعُواso they descended

Then they departed: most of my tribe went downhill,
all together, while Da'd's tribe went uphill.
فَهَيهاتَhow far away, then مِمَّنfrom one who بِالخَوَرْنَقِِat al-Khawarnaq دارُهُhis home

How far apart are one whose home is at al-Khawarnaq,
settled there, and a traveling tribe that has gone to Najd!

Those people left me behind the morning they broke camp;
rightly was my heart alarmed and stricken

I rose when she rose, spoke, and turned away,
trailing a fresh silk garment and a saffron-dyed robe.

The mole-marked woman's gaze grew cold as she grew estranged,
and she said, “I see this young man has grown gaunt.

By God, I do not know: has love wasted him,
so that his body has wasted away, or has he taken to worship?”

That is she: I never recall my familiar ways
and hers through the years without grieving deeply.

now time's fangs have grown crooked, and it has turned away,

nor any guardian in the tribe, who is not greatly envied.

Her lovers are spared reproach, since
only a man of self-command endures being without women like her.

one of the radiant women, clad in striped Shar'abi cloth.

when she draws the outstretched leather tent-cover away.

for a spear set upright among spears that have bent.

“I see youth's garment has fallen from you in shreds.”

my soul from madness, lest it die and waste away with grief.

A reproaching woman rose at night to blame me,
when the Pleiades' 'Ayyuq had set and vanished.

while the carefree man, at peace of mind, slept all the more deeply.

A falsehood, made to seem real to him, revisited him,
and a phantom wandered by, wandering from Umm Aswad.

Misguidedly, she reproaches me for giving away wealth,
when the miser gathers wealth and counts it.

Otherwise, lessen some of your reproach, and let
your judgment rest upon the judgment of the one you reproached.
