You are the chosen beloved, and joy is yours;
You are the beloved, the chosen one, and joy belongs to you
I am the afflicted lover, and hardship is mine.
While I am the lover, the afflicted one, and grief is mine

You are wealthy, and will never be seen humbled;
You are wealthy, and never will you see one more humble
I am poverty itself, and cannot do without you.
While I am poor, and have no riches except through you

منى ولى منك الكآبةُ والضَّنَا
You alone among God's creatures have an ample share
You have, apart from God's creation, abundant fortune
Of me; from you I have sorrow and wasting sickness.
While I have from you misery and sorrow

O dwellers of the valley of Arak, I see you
Do not expect punishment from our Lord.
Not fearing any punishment from our Lord

You left the anguish of my heart behind heading
In Tihamah, while you settled in the valley of Mina.
To Tihama, settling in the valley of Mina

You did not allow me to ask how you have been after us

What have I done to deserve your coldness?
What wrong have I done to deserve your aloofness
Who is it among the talebearers who changed our bond?
Who of the slanderers has changed our bond?

If your servant has committed any fault,
If your servant has slipped into a sin
He is repentant, if he has indeed committed a sin.
He repents if he has reaped something wrong

Have mercy on one who has lived his days
Changes hue from loving you after separation.
Loving you, with a changing complexion

A visit, just say maybe, and perhaps we

So maybe he will get an excuse from you
And what I endured from you may become easy to bear.
And what I suffered from you becomes easy

At al-Munhana and al-Raqmayn, he would have found no joy.
Trysts in the valley, and markings, he would not have lived

Love is sweet to the taste at first;
Love is sweetest at first
But once it takes command, you find its fruit bitter.
But when it takes over, it turns bitter

Minds almost lose reason, and selves
Had breezes from your dwellings not passed over us.
If not for the winds of your dwellings that passed by us

At how longing shapes my state.

Passion passed over all creatures;
Passion has passed all people
It passed them by; when it saw me, it plunged deep.
But lingered when it saw me and deepened

What can I say to its claims of being my home?

If I deny what it claims, contradicting
The tears, those upright witnesses, testify: 'Your secret is with us.'
The witnesses of my tears will tell my secret near you

The reason for the attachment is a glance at their beauty
It took firm hold when I turned my eyes.
So it took hold when I turned my eyes

What is the way to freedom when I
Have exposed myself to humiliation—be certain of it.
Exposed myself to disgrace with certainty?

Remaining between the two abodes, settled

I do not aspire to the means of others
For with him I lived in happiness and prosperity.
When I was with him in fortune and riches

In my poetry; be indulgent, and take what I could offer.
In poetry, so pardon and take what we can manage
