To you—my eye's tears do not cease,

And so my heart is consumed with sorrow.

I have a burning liver that melts, as though

Upon a flow of molten metal, ceaselessly breaking apart.

And an eye's eyelids are sore from weeping,

For all time, no tear ever brings them respite.

And a heart hostile to consolation—how could it not be,

When generosity's abode is abandoned, a barren waste,

At the death of him through whom every ignorant person sought guidance,

And became a willing ally of right guidance?

He is the shaykh ʿAbd Allah, descended from Muhammad,

A scion of ʿAli (reading uncertain), that noble, eloquent man.

My soul for one unmatched in form and likeness, who has no

Path to religion and worldly life except renunciation.

My soul for a generous man—his return is not, no, not hoped for.

Is there a way back to beholding his face?

I did not know, before your burial in the earth,

Nor imagine that the sun could be laid in a grave.

Every calamity among humankind is a tragedy,

But in the noblest of creatures it is more grievous.

And every death that descends is dreadful,

But in the most honorable of creatures it is more dreadful.

And every affliction is inevitably painful,

And if it befalls the best of humankind, more painful still.

As they once quoted a verse of poetry,

Which we heard transmitted from the departed scholar:

Every eclipse among the radiant stars is dreadful,

But in the sun and the full moon it is more dreadful.

Can the world after you be pleasant for anyone of sense?

How could it, when a springtime dwelling on your grounds lies deserted?

And how can life be sweet for humankind after you,

When you are wrapped in garments of dust?

Alas for my soul after your death, my master!

And oh, my heart's burning—the anguish never ends!

Who will tend to piety, religion, and guidance after you?

And who will come forward for generosity, bounty, and virtue?

May your grave, made glad by light and guidance, be watered,

And by knowledge and piety—by clouds pouring rain,

Steadily, abundantly, in unending, pouring torrents,

As tears from my eyelids have already showered it.

And a calamity—the earth almost trembles in fear

Before it, and the summits of the rooted mountains split apart.

Oh, what a calamity, paralyzing every misfortune,

So that every calamity beside it is itself bereaved.

    It has overwhelmed the people of the earth with sorrow and anguish;

Who, then, has reached evening without suffering?

No wonder, then, that I made the channels of my tears run

With fresh blood, since the saint borne away in mourning has perished.

Nor is it strange if I have become grief's companion, when

The departing beloved has now grown distant from me.

Nor is it strange if sorrow burns my heart's lifeblood,

When I have no hope of meeting you.

But it would be strange if I smiled in laughter,

In consolation, when I have no open path to your return.

O distant one, cool my breast with a glance,

For I am content with the slightest glance from you.

And ask a heart I have watched for so long:

It has become sick, distraught with longing and aching.

So the All-Merciful has lodged him in His holy presence,

And he now delights in a garden of fragrant herbs.

And each person weeps at his loss,

Their eyelids sore, their two eyes shedding tears.

If weeping helped, we would weep for him all our lives

    Blood—but weeping does not help.

Our saint's death came in Rajab,

When half its counted days had passed—so listen and heed.

And a thousand years had passed before,

Three followed, and after them four,

Since the migration of our guide, the Prophet Muhammad.

He is the chosen, pure intercessor whose plea is accepted.

God's blessings be upon him as long as a bird laments,

And as long as lightning is seen flashing among the clouds.

Were it not for the imam of the Muslims, there would be

    Steeds of generosity exhausted with grief and limping;

And the branch of knowledge and religion would have withered,

And generosity's abode, its hillocks effaced, would lie darkened.

And bounty's face would have become dusty and grim,

Bereft of eye-corners, blackened and with its nose cut off.

He is the gallant Sultan bin Saif bin Malik,

The pure imam of guidance, the scrupulously pious youth.

A brave man: you see the brave perish in fear

Before him, falling around him in submission.

The lands quake in fear of him,

And the lofty, rooted mountains tremble at his might.

Kings bow to him before his might and strength,

    Trembling around him, humbled.

A sovereign: you see the world under the rule of his hand,

So he gives to whomever he wills, and withholds.

A generous man, whose hand flows with gifts,

And whose breast is like the face of the earth—indeed, wider still.

He is the sea in beneficence: its depth cannot be seen.

He is rain in generosity: his rain-clouds never disperse.
