To take as my pillow the claws of snakes as they writhe,
My resting my head on the claws of writhing serpents,
Or spread beneath me embers while they blaze,
or my lying on embers as they blaze,
أوor أنto أُصادقَI befriend أقراناًrivals علىat غَرَرٍrisk

Or befriend peers at my peril,
or befriending rivals at my peril,
While they glare askance, spears and swords in hand,
glaring askance, with spears and swords in their hands,

Or meet the lions of the wild advancing,
or meeting the forest's lions as they advance,
Roaring, with fury in their bellies—
roaring, with fury in their entrails,

All this is more bearable and easier than men’s rancor, and than
would be safer and easier than men's rancor and
The enmity of family and neighbors when they turn rabid.
the enmity of kin and neighbors if they turn rabid.
لابدَّthere must be منof حيلةٍa stratagem تحتالُyou contrive بعدafterward بهاby means of it
والخيلand the horses تُدْبِرُretreat والخُرْصانand the spears تُنقلبُare turned back
Some stratagem must surely be devised against such things in time:
There must be some stratagem you can later employ;
Horses turn and flee, and lances are overturned;
and horses retreat, and spears are turned back;
والبِيضُand the gleaming swords تجبُنُquail يوماًone day وهيthough they are قاطعةٌkeen-edged
وينطفىand goes out الجمرُthe embers والحيَّاتُand the serpents تنسربُslip away
Bright blades one day lose courage, though they cut;
and gleaming swords may one day quail, though keen;
Embers die, and snakes slip away.
and embers die out, and serpents slip away.

But these people—their treacheries can never be escaped
But these men—one is never safe from their treachery,
Until death; one never ceases to keep watch.
until death; so one never ceases to keep watch.

Nothing is ever graver than our condition:
Nothing is ever more grievous than our plight:
Waiting for it sets the innermost heart ablaze.
a waiting that sets the entrails ablaze.
