    They say that patience is a person's provision,

    and that is well known, yet the undertaking does not succeed.

    But I see in patience, if it lasts a while,

    worries and sorrows that constrict the breast.

    يضيقُ عَلَى من رَامها البرُّ والبحرُ

    And in it are intractable, devastating matters;

    land and sea close in on whoever pursues them.

    And in it are great, grievous torments,

    whose force nearly breaks the back.

    By the time the hopeful one sees his desire attained,

    through patience, his lifetime runs out as his days pass.

    If there is immortality in this world—bravo, bravo!

    Otherwise, why be patient, when patience wastes the body away?

    وفي طاعةِ الرحمن ربّي هُو الأجْرُ

    So patience is only in shunning what is strictly forbidden;

    and in obedience to the Merciful, my Lord, lies the reward.
