لا خيرَ في مستقبلٍ أو حاضرٍ

لا خيرَ في مستقبلٍ أو حاضرٍ

فاسمعْ أخى كلاًّ ولا في أولِ

فاسمعْ أخى كلاًّ ولا في أولِ

There is no good in the future or the present;

So hear it all, my brother—nor in the past.

ذهبتْ لذاذةُ أولاً فانظر ترى

ذهبتْ لذاذةُ أولاً فانظر ترى

نالتك لذةُ مرتجىً مستقبلِ

نالتك لذةُ مرتجىً مستقبلِ

The sweetness of the past has gone; so look and see:

Has the delight of a future hope reached you?

أمَّا الذي حضرتْ لذاذته فقد

أمَّا الذي حضرتْ لذاذته فقد

قنعتْ عُيونُك منه فاسمعْ واعملِ

قنعتْ عُيونُك منه فاسمعْ واعملِ

As for that whose sweetness is at hand,

Your eyes have already had their fill of it; so listen and act.

هذا محالٌ من مقالِك لم يكن

هذا محالٌ من مقالِك لم يكن

هلْ أنتَ ناشٍ من حصى أو جندلِ

هلْ أنتَ ناشٍ من حصى أو جندلِ

This claim of yours is absurd; it has never been so.

Have you sprung from pebbles or boulders?

أعطِ القيادَ فلا تكنْ متنكباً

أعطِ القيادَ فلا تكنْ متنكباً

لا بدّ في الدنيا لنا من منزلِ

لا بدّ في الدنيا لنا من منزلِ

Yield the reins, and do not turn aside.

We must have a dwelling in this world.

إن أنت نكَّبت الهوى عن أولِ

إن أنت نكَّبت الهوى عن أولِ

أو حاضرٍ لا بد من مستقبلِ

أو حاضرٍ لا بد من مستقبلِ

If you turn desire away from the past

Or the present, there is no escaping the future.
